Translation

Abu Sa'eeed Al Khudri narrated: When Allah;s Messenger stood for Salat during the night, he would say the Takbir (Allahu Akbar), then say: (Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa Tabarakasmuka wa Ta'ala Jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk.) 'Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blesses is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You' Then he would say: (A'udhu Bilahi As-Sami'il-Alimi min Ash-Shaitanir-Rajimi, min Hamzihi Wa Nafkhihi wa Nafthihi.) 'Allah is undoubtedly the greatest.' (Allahu Akbaru Kabira). Then he would say: 'I seek refuge in Allah the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from the cursed Shaitan, from his madness, his arrogance, and his poetry.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُوسَى الْبَصْرِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ الضُّبَعِيُّ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الرِّفَاعِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي الْمُتَوَكِّلِ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ بِاللَّيْلِ كَبَّرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ ثُمَّ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ كَبِيرًا ثُمَّ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ السَّمِيعِ الْعَلِيمِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ مِنْ هَمْزِهِ وَنَفْخِهِ وَنَفْثِهِ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَجَابِرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَجُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وَحَدِيثُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ أَشْهَرُ حَدِيثٍ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ أَخَذَ قَوْمٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَمَّا أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ بِمَا رُوِيَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلَا إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ وَهَكَذَا رُوِيَ عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ أَكْثَرِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ وَغَيْرِهِمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ تُكُلِّمَ فِي إِسْنَادِ حَدِيثِ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَانَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ يَتَكَلَّمُ فِي عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ الرِّفَاعِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وقَالَ أَحْمَدُ:‏‏‏‏ لَا يَصِحُّ هَذَا الْحَدِيثُ.

ابو سعید خدری رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رات کو جب نماز کے لیے کھڑے ہوتے تو «اللہ اکبر» کہتے، پھر «سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك» ”اے اللہ! پاک ہے تو ہر عیب اور ہر نقص سے، سب تعریفیں تیرے لیے ہیں، بابرکت ہے تیرا نام اور بلند ہے تیری شان، اور تیرے سوا کوئی معبود برحق نہیں“ پڑھتے پھر «الله أكبر كبيرا» ”اللہ بہت بڑا ہے“ کہتے پھر «أعوذ بالله السميع العليم من الشيطان الرجيم من همزه ونفخه ونفثه» ”میں اللہ سمیع و علیم کی شیطان مردود سے، پناہ چاہتا ہوں، اس کے وسوسوں سے، اس کے کبر و نخوت سے اور اس کے اشعار اور جادو سے“ کہتے ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- اس باب میں علی، عائشہ، عبداللہ بن مسعود، جابر، جبیر بن مطعم اور ابن عمر رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۲- اس باب میں ابوسعید کی حدیث سب سے زیادہ مشہور ہے، ۳- اہل علم میں سے کچھ لوگوں نے اسی حدیث کو اختیار کیا ہے، رہے اکثر اہل علم تو ان لوگوں نے وہی کہا ہے جو نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے مروی ہے کہ آپ «سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك وتبارك اسمك وتعالى جدك ولا إله غيرك» کہتے تھے ۲؎ اور اسی طرح عمر بن خطاب اور عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہما سے مروی ہے۔ تابعین وغیرہم میں سے اکثر اہل علم کا اسی پر عمل ہے۔ ۴- ابوسعید رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث کی سند میں کلام کیا گیا ہے۔ یحییٰ بن سعید راوی حدیث علی بن علی رفاعی کے بارے میں کلام کرتے تھے۔ اور احمد کہتے تھے کہ یہ حدیث صحیح نہیں ہے۔

Aishah narrated: When the Prophet opened the Salat he would say: (Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika wa tabarakasmuka, wa ta'ala jadduka wa la ilaha ghairuk) 'Glorious You are O Allah, and with Your praise, and blessed is Your Name, and exalted is Your majesty, and none has the right to be worshipped but You.'

Ibn Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrated: While I was praying, I said: Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent. My father heard me and said: O my son this is a newly invented matter, beware of the newly-invented.' He (Ibn Abdullah) said: I have not seen any one of the Companions of Allah's Messenger who hated a newly invented matter in Islam more than him. And he said: 'Ihave performed Salat with the Prophet, and with Abu Bakr, and Umar, and with Uthman. I did not hear any one of them saying it. So do not say it. When you are performing Salat say: Al-Hamdu lilahi Rabbil-Alamin All praise is due to Allah the Lord of all that exists.'

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Prophet would open his Salat with (Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim).

Anas narrated: Allah's Messenger, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman opened the Salat with (Al-Hamdu-lillahi rabbil-alamin).

Ubadah bin As-Samil narrated that : the Prophet said: There is no Salat for the one who does not recite Fatihatil-Kitab.

Wa'il bin Hujr narrated: I heard the Prophet recite: (Not (the way) of those who earned Your anger, nor those who went astray) and he said: 'Amin.' And he stretched it out with his voice.
