Ibn Abbas narrated: The Prophet would open his Salat with (Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Rahim).
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ الضَّبِّيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ حَمَّادٍ، عَنْ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَفْتَتِحُ صَلَاتَهُ بْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1 . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ لَيْسَ إِسْنَادُهُ بِذَاكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ بِهَذَا عِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مِنْهُمْ أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ مِنَ التَّابِعِينَ رَأَوْا الْجَهْرَ بْ:‏‏‏‏ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ سورة الفاتحة آية 1، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَبِهِ يَقُولُ الشَّافِعِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ حَمَّادٍ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي سُلَيْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبُو خَالِدٍ يُقَالُ:‏‏‏‏ هُوَ أَبُو خَالِدٍ الْوَالِبِيُّ وَاسْمُهُ:‏‏‏‏ هُرْمُزُ وَهُوَ كُوفِيٌّ.
عبداللہ بن عباس رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ   نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم اپنی نماز «بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم» سے شروع کرتے تھے۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- اس کی سند قوی نہیں ہے، ۲- صحابہ کرام میں سے جن میں ابوہریرہ، ابن عمر، ابن عباس اور ابن زبیر رضی الله عنہم شامل ہیں اور ان کے بعد تابعین میں سے کئی اہل علم «بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم» زور سے کہنے کے قائل ہیں، اور یہی شافعی بھی کہتے ہیں۔

Al-Hasan narrated that : Samurah said: there are two pauses that I preserved from Allah's Messenger. But Imran bin Husain rejected that and said: We preserved one pause. So we wrote to Ubayy bin Ka'b in Al-Madinah. Ubayy wrote that Samurah was correct. Sa'eed said: We said to Qatadah: 'What are those two pauses?' He said: 'When he entered into his Salat, and when he finished his recitation.' Then he (Qatadah) said after that: 'And when he recited (Nor those who went astray.)' And he said: 'He liked to pause when he finished the recitation until he caught his breath.'
