It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: The Messenger of Allah enjoined Zakatul-Fitr, a Sa' of dates or a Sa of barley, upon the free person and the slave, male and female, young and old, among the Muslims. He commanded that it be given before the people went out to the ('fd) prayer.

أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ السَّكَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَهْضَمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَرَضَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَكَاةَ الْفِطْرِ صَاعًا مِنْ تَمْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَلَى الْحُرِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْعَبْدِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالذَّكَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْأُنْثَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالصَّغِيرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْكَبِيرِ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَمَرَ بِهَا أَنْ تُؤَدَّى قَبْلَ خُرُوجِ النَّاسِ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ .

عبداللہ بن عمر رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے زکاۃ فطر مسلمانوں میں سے ہر آزاد، غلام مرد، عورت چھوٹے اور بڑے پر ایک صاع کھجور یا ایک صاع جو فرض کیا ہے، اور حکم دیا ہے کہ اسے لوگوں کے ( عید کی ) نماز کے لیے ( گھر سے ) نکلنے سے پہلے ادا کر دیا جائے۔

It was narrated that Qais bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah Said: We used to fast on 'Ashura and give Zakatul-Fitr, and when the command to fast in Ramadan was revealed, and the command to give Zakah was revealed, we were neither commanded to give it, nor told not to do so, and we used to do it.

It was narrated that Qais bin Sa'd said: The Messenger of Allah commanded us to give Sadaqatul Fitr before the command to give Zakah was revealed. When the command to give Zakah was revealed, he neither told us to do it, not told us not to do it, and we used to do it. (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasai) said: Abu 'Ammar's name is 'Arib bin Humaid, and 'Amr bin Shurabbil's Kunyah is Abu Maisarah, and Salamah bin Kuhail contradicted Al-Hakam in his chain, and Al-Hakam is more reliable than Salamah bin Kuhail.

When he was the governor of Al-Basrah, at the end of the month, Ibn 'Abbas said: Give Zakah of your fast. The people looked at one another, so he said: Whoever is here from the people of Al-Madinah, get up and teach your brothers, for they do lnot know that this Zakah was enjoined by the Messenger of Allah upon every male and female, free and slave, a Sa' of barley or dates, or half a Sa' of wheat. So they got up. (Da'if) Hisham contradicted him, he said: From Muhammad bin Sirin.

It was narrated that Abu Raja' said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas deliver a Khutbah from your Minbar - meaning the Minbar in Al-Basrah - saying: 'Sadaqatul Fitr is a Sa' of food. (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: This is the most reliable of the three.
