When he was the governor of Al-Basrah, at the end of the month, Ibn 'Abbas said: Give Zakah of your fast. The people looked at one another, so he said: Whoever is here from the people of Al-Madinah, get up and teach your brothers, for they do lnot know that this Zakah was enjoined by the Messenger of Allah upon every male and female, free and slave, a Sa' of barley or dates, or half a Sa' of wheat. So they got up. (Da'if) Hisham contradicted him, he said: From Muhammad bin Sirin.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حُمَيْدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ أَمِيرُ الْبَصْرَةِ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْرِجُوا زَكَاةَ صَوْمِكُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَظَرَ النَّاسُ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ هَاهُنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُومُوا فَعَلِّمُوا إِخْوَانَكُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ هَذِهِ الزَّكَاةَ فَرَضَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى كُلِّ ذَكَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأُنْثَى حُرٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَمْلُوكٍ صَاعًا مِنْ شَعِيرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ تَمْرٍ أَوْ نِصْفَ صَاعٍ مِنْ قَمْحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَامُوا ،‏‏‏‏ خَالَفَهُ هِشَامٌ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ.

حسن بصری کہتے ہیں کہ ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے رمضان کے مہینے کے آخر میں کہا ( جب وہ بصرہ کے امیر تھے ) : تم اپنے روزوں کی زکاۃ نکالو، تو لوگ ایک دوسرے کو تکنے لگے تو انہوں نے پوچھا: مدینہ والوں میں سے یہاں کون کون ہے ( جو بھی ہو ) اٹھ جاؤ، اور اپنے بھائیوں کو بتاؤ، کیونکہ یہ لوگ نہیں جانتے کہ اس زکاۃ کو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہر مرد، عورت، آزاد اور غلام پر ایک صاع جو یا کھجور، یا آدھا صاع گی ہوں فرض کیا ہے، تو لوگ اٹھے ( اور انہوں نے لوگوں کو بتایا ) ۔ ابوعبدالرحمٰن ( نسائی ) کہتے ہیں: ہشام نے حمید کی مخالفت کی ہے، انہوں نے «عن محمد بن سيرين» کہا ہے۔

It was narrated that: Ibn 'Abbas said concerning Sadaqatul-Fitr. A Sa' of wheat, or a Sa' of dates, or Sa of barley, or a Sa' of rye. (Sahih Mawquf)

It was narrated that Abu Raja' said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas deliver a Khutbah from your Minbar - meaning the Minbar in Al-Basrah - saying: 'Sadaqatul Fitr is a Sa' of food. (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: This is the most reliable of the three.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr, a Sa' of barley or a Sa of dates or a Sa' of cottage cheese.

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: We used to pay Zakaul Fitr when the Messenger of Allah was among us; a Sa' of food, or a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of dates, or a Sa' of raisins, or a Sa of cottage cheese.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed said: We used to pay Salaqatul Fitr when the Messenger of Allah was among us; a Sa' of food, or a Sa' of dates, or a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of cottage cheese. We continued to do so until Mu'awiyah came from Ash-Sham and one of the things that he taught the people was when he said: I think that two Mudds of wheat from Ash-Sham are equivalent to a Sa' of this, So the people took to that.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: At the time of the Messenger of Allah we did not give anything except a Sa' of dates, or a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of raisins, or a Sa' of flour, or a Sa' of cottage cheese, or a Sa' of rye. Then (one of the narrators) Sufyan was uncertain and said: Flour or rye.
