Translation

It was narrated that Qais bin Sa'd said: The Messenger of Allah commanded us to give Sadaqatul Fitr before the command to give Zakah was revealed. When the command to give Zakah was revealed, he neither told us to do it, not told us not to do it, and we used to do it. (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasai) said: Abu 'Ammar's name is 'Arib bin Humaid, and 'Amr bin Shurabbil's Kunyah is Abu Maisarah, and Salamah bin Kuhail contradicted Al-Hakam in his chain, and Al-Hakam is more reliable than Salamah bin Kuhail.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سُفْيَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ الْهَمْدَانِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِصَدَقَةِ الْفِطْرِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْزِلَ الزَّكَاةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا نَزَلَتِ الزَّكَاةُ لَمْ يَأْمُرْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَمْ يَنْهَنَا وَنَحْنُ نَفْعَلُهُ ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ:‏‏‏‏ أَبُو عَمَّارٍ اسْمُهُ عَرِيبُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَمْرُو بْنُ شُرَحْبِيلَ يُكْنَى أَبَا مَيْسَرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُهَيْلٍ خَالَفَ الْحَكَمَ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ وَالْحَكَمُ أَثْبَتُ مِنْ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ كُهَيْلٍ.

قیس بن سعد رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں زکاۃ کی فرضیت اترنے سے پہلے صدقہ فطر کا حکم دیا تھا، پھر جب زکاۃ کی فرضیت اتری تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں نہ کرنے کا حکم دیا اور نہ ہی روکا، اور ہم اسے کرتے رہے۔ ابوعبدالرحمٰن کہتے ہیں: ابوعمار کا نام عریب بن حمید ہے۔ اور عمرو بن شرحبیل کی کنیت ابومیسرہ ہے، اور سلمہ بن کہیل نے اپنی سند میں حکم کی مخالفت کی ہے اور حکم سلمہ بن کہیل سے زیادہ ثقہ راوی ہیں ۱؎۔

When he was the governor of Al-Basrah, at the end of the month, Ibn 'Abbas said: Give Zakah of your fast. The people looked at one another, so he said: Whoever is here from the people of Al-Madinah, get up and teach your brothers, for they do lnot know that this Zakah was enjoined by the Messenger of Allah upon every male and female, free and slave, a Sa' of barley or dates, or half a Sa' of wheat. So they got up. (Da'if) Hisham contradicted him, he said: From Muhammad bin Sirin.

It was narrated that Abu Raja' said: I heard Ibn 'Abbas deliver a Khutbah from your Minbar - meaning the Minbar in Al-Basrah - saying: 'Sadaqatul Fitr is a Sa' of food. (Sahih) Abu 'Abdur-Rahman (An-Nasa'i) said: This is the most reliable of the three.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: The Messenger of Allah enjoined Sadaqatul Fitr, a Sa' of barley or a Sa of dates or a Sa' of cottage cheese.

It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed said: We used to pay Salaqatul Fitr when the Messenger of Allah was among us; a Sa' of food, or a Sa' of dates, or a Sa' of barley, or a Sa' of cottage cheese. We continued to do so until Mu'awiyah came from Ash-Sham and one of the things that he taught the people was when he said: I think that two Mudds of wheat from Ash-Sham are equivalent to a Sa' of this, So the people took to that.
