Anas bin Malik narrated: Allah's Messenger fell from a horse and got injured, so he led Salat sitting and we also offered Salat sitting. When he completed the Salat he said: The Imam is appointed to be followed; when he says the Takbir then say the Takbir, when he bows, then bow, and when he raises his head, then raise your heads. When he says: Sami' Allahu liman hamidah (Allah listens to those who praise him) then say: Rabbana wa lakal-hamd. (O our Lord! And all praise is Yours.) and when he prostrates, then prostrate, and when he performs Salat sitting, then pray sitting altogether.'

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ خَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ فَرَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجُحِشَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَلَّى بِنَا قَاعِدًا فَصَلَّيْنَا مَعَهُ قُعُودًا ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا الْإِمَامُ أَوْ إِنَّمَا جُعِلَ الْإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا رَكَعَ فَارْكَعُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا رَفَعَ فَارْفَعُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُولُوا:‏‏‏‏ رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا سَجَدَ فَاسْجُدُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا صَلَّى قَاعِدًا فَصَلُّوا قُعُودًا أَجْمَعُونَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ عَائِشَةَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ وَجَابِرٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ وَمُعَاوِيَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وَحَدِيثُ أَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَّ عَنْ فَرَسٍ فَجُحِشَ . حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ ذَهَبَ بَعْضُ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏مِنْهُمْ جَابِر بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ وَأُسَيْدُ بْنُ حُضَيْرٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ وَغَيْرُهُمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَبِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ يَقُولُ أَحْمَدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِسْحَاق:‏‏‏‏ وقَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا صَلَّى الْإِمَامُ جَالِسًا لَمْ يُصَلِّ مَنْ خَلْفَهُ إِلَّا قِيَامًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ صَلَّوْا قُعُودًا لَمْ تُجْزِهِمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ قَوْلُ:‏‏‏‏ سفيان الثوري،‏‏‏‏ وَمَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ،‏‏‏‏ وَالشَّافِعِيِّ.

انس بن مالک رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم گھوڑے سے گر پڑے، آپ کو خراش آ گئی ۱؎ تو آپ نے ہمیں بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھائی، ہم نے بھی آپ کے ساتھ بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھی۔ پھر آپ نے ہماری طرف پلٹ کر فرمایا: ”امام ہوتا ہی اس لیے ہے یا امام بنایا ہی اس لیے گیا ہے تاکہ اس کی اقتداء کی جائے، جب وہ «الله أكبر» کہے تو تم بھی «الله أكبر» کہو، اور جب وہ رکوع کرے، تو تم بھی رکوع کرو، اور جب وہ سر اٹھائے تو تم بھی سر اٹھاؤ، اور جب وہ «سمع الله لمن حمده‏» کہے تو تم «ربنا لك الحمد‏» کہو، اور جب وہ سجدہ کرے تو تم بھی سجدہ کرو اور جب وہ بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھے تو تم سب بھی بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھو“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- انس رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- اس باب میں عائشہ، ابوہریرہ، جابر، ابن عمر اور معاویہ رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۳- بعض صحابہ کرام جن میں میں جابر بن عبداللہ، اسید بن حضیر اور ابوہریرہ رضی الله عنہم وغیرہ ہیں اسی حدیث کی طرف گئے ہیں اور یہی قول احمد اور اسحاق بن راہویہ کا بھی ہے، ۴- بعض اہل علم کا کہنا ہے کہ جب امام بیٹھ کر پڑھے تو مقتدی کھڑے ہو کر ہی پڑھیں، اگر انہوں نے بیٹھ کر پڑھی تو یہ نماز انہیں کافی نہ ہو گی، یہ سفیان ثوری، مالک بن انس، ابن مبارک اور شافعی کا قول ہے ۲؎۔

Ash-Sha'bi narrated: Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah led us in Salat, and he continued after the two Rak'ah, so the people said: 'Subhan Allah' and he said: 'Subhan Allah' to them. When he finished his Salat he said the Taslim then performed two prostrations of As-Sahw while he was sitting. Then he narrated to them that Allah's Messenger did the same with them as he had done.

Ziyad bin Haqah narrated: Al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah les us in Salat. When he prayed two Rak'ah he stood without sitting. Those who were behind him said 'Subhan Allah' and he indicated to them that they should stand. He said the Taslim when he had finished his Salat and he performed two prostrations of As-Sahw, and said the Taslim. He said that Allah's Messenger did this.

Ubaidullah bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated from his father (Abdullah bin Mas'ud) that he said: When Allah's Messenger sat for the first two Rak'ah it was as if he was on hot stones. Shu'bah (one of the narrators) said: Then Sa'd's lips moved (saying) something. So I said: 'Until he stood?' He said: 'Until he stood.'

Suhaib narrated: I passed by Allah's Messenger (S) while he was performing Salat, so I said greeted him with Salam, and he returned it by making signals. He said: I do not know except that he said: 'He indicated with his finger.'
