Zirr bin Hubaish said: “I came to Safwan bin `Assal Al Muradi to ask him about wiping over the Khuff, so he said: ‘What has brought you, O Zirr?’ So I said: ‘The desire for knowledge.’ So he said: ‘Indeed, the angels lower their wings for the seeker of knowledge, out of pleasure with what he is seeking.’ So I said: ‘Indeed there is some doubt in my chest concerning wiping over the Khuff after defecation and urination, and you were a man from the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ), so I came to you to ask you: Have you heard him (ﷺ) mention anything concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, he (ﷺ) used to order us, that when we were travelers’ - or - ‘in travel, to not remove our Khuff for three days and nights except, from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “Have you heard him (ﷺ) mention anything concerning love?” He said: “Yes. We were with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey when a Bedouin with a loud voice called upon him (saying): ‘O Muhammad!’ So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) responded to him with a voice similar to him (saying): ‘Come.’ So we said to him: ‘Lower your voice for you are with the Prophet (ﷺ), and you have been prohibited from this.’ He said: ‘By Allah, I will not lower (my voice).’ The Bedouin said: ‘A man loves a people but he is not with them (in terms of deeds)?’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘A man is with whomever he loves on the Day of Judgement.’” So he did not cease talking with us, until he mentioned a gate in the direction of the west with the width of seventy years journey - or a rider would travel its width - for forty or seventy years.” Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: “In the direction of Ash-Sham, Allah created it the Day He created the heavens and the earth, open - that is, for repentance. It shall not be locked until the sun rises through it.”

حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَاصِمِ بْنِ أَبِي النَّجُودِ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَيْتُ صَفْوَانَ بْنَ عَسَّالٍ الْمُرَادِيَّ أَسْأَلُهُ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا جَاءَ بِكَ يَا زِرُّ ؟ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ ابْتِغَاءَ الْعِلْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ لَتَضَعُ أَجْنِحَتَهَا لِطَالِبِ الْعِلْمِ رِضًا بِمَا يَطْلُبُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّهُ حَكَّ فِي صَدْرِي الْمَسْحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ بَعْدَ الْغَائِطِ وَالْبَوْلِ وَكُنْتَ امْرَأً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجِئْتُ أَسْأَلُكَ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ فِي ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ كَانَ يَأْمُرُنَا إِذَا كُنَّا سَفَرًا أَوْ مُسَافِرِينَ أَنْ لَا نَنْزِعَ خِفَافَنَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ وَلَيَالِيهِنَّ إِلَّا مِنْ جَنَابَةٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَكِنْ مِنْ غَائِطٍ وَبَوْلٍ وَنَوْمٍ . (حديث مرفوع) (حديث موقوف) فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ سَمِعْتَهُ يَذْكُرُ فِي الْهَوَى شَيْئًا ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كُنَّا مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَفَرٍ فَبَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَهُ إِذْ نَادَاهُ أَعْرَابِيٌّ بِصَوْتٍ لَهُ جَهْوَرِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَا مُحَمَّدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَجَابَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوًا مِنْ صَوْتِهِ هَاؤُمُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْنَا لَهُ:‏‏‏‏ وَيْحَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏اغْضُضْ مِنْ صَوْتِكَ فَإِنَّكَ عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَدْ نُهِيتَ عَنْ هَذَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَاللَّهِ لَا أَغْضُضُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ الْأَعْرَابِيُّ:‏‏‏‏ الْمَرْءُ يُحِبُّ الْقَوْمَ وَلَمَّا يَلْحَقْ بِهِمْ ؟ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ الْمَرْءُ مَعَ مَنْ أَحَبَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَمَا زَالَ يُحَدِّثُنَا حَتَّى ذَكَرَ بَابًا مِنْ قِبَلِ الْمَغْرِبِ مَسِيرَةُ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا عَرْضُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ يَسِيرُ الرَّاكِبُ فِي عَرْضِهِ أَرْبَعِينَ أَوْ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ سُفْيَانُ:‏‏‏‏ قِبَلَ الشَّامِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏خَلَقَهُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ مَفْتُوحًا يَعْنِي لِلتَّوْبَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَا يُغْلَقُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْهُ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

زر بن حبیش کہتے ہیں کہ میں صفوان بن عسال مرادی رضی الله عنہ کے پاس موزوں پر مسح کا مسئلہ پوچھنے آیا، انہوں نے ( مجھ سے ) پوچھا اے زر کون سا جذبہ تمہیں لے کر یہاں آیا ہے، میں نے کہا: علم کی تلاش و طلب مجھے یہاں لے کر آئی ہے، انہوں نے کہا: فرشتے علم کی طلب و تلاش سے خوش ہو کر طالب علم کے لیے اپنے پر بچھاتے ہیں، میں نے ان سے کہا: پیشاب پاخانے سے فراغت کے بعد موزوں پر مسح کی بات میرے دل میں کھٹکی ( کہ مسح کریں یا نہ کریں ) میں خود بھی صحابی رسول ہوں، میں آپ سے یہ پوچھنے آیا ہوں کہ کیا آپ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو اس سلسلے میں کوئی بات بیان کرتے ہوئے سنی ہے؟ کہا: جی ہاں ( سنی ہے ) جب ہم سفر پر ہوتے یا سفر کرنے والے ہوتے تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہمیں حکم دیتے تھے کہ ”ہم سفر کے دوران تین دن و رات اپنے موزے نہ نکالیں، مگر غسل جنابت کے لیے، پاخانہ پیشاب کر کے اور سو کر اٹھنے پر موزے نہ نکالیں“، ( پہنے رہیں، مسح کا وقت آئے ان پر مسح کر لیں ) میں نے ان سے پوچھا: کیا آپ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے انسان کی خواہش و تمنا کا ذکر کرتے ہوئے سنا ہے؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہاں، ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ سفر کر رہے تھے، اس دوران کہ ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس تھے ایک اعرابی نے آپ کو یا محمد! کہہ کر بلند آواز سے پکارا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے اسی کی آواز میں جواب دیا، ”آ جاؤ ( میں یہاں ہوں ) “ ہم نے اس سے کہا: تمہارا ناس ہو، اپنی آواز دھیمی کر لو، کیونکہ تم نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس ہو، اور تمہیں اس سے منع کیا گیا ہے کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس بلند آواز سے بولا جائے، اعرابی نے کہا: ( نہ ) قسم اللہ کی میں اپنی آواز پست نہیں کروں گا، اس نے «المرء يحب القوم ولما يلحق بهم» ۱؎ کہہ کر آپ سے اپنی انتہائی محبت و تعلق کا اظہار کیا۔ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «المرء مع من أحب يوم القيامة» ”جو شخص جس شخص سے زیادہ محبت کرتا ہے قیامت کے دن وہ اسی کے ساتھ رہے گا“۔ وہ ہم سے ( یعنی زر کہتے ہیں ہم سے صفوان بن عسال ) حدیث بیان کرتے رہے یہاں تک کہ انہوں نے پچھمی سمت ( مغرب کی طرف ) میں ایک ایسے دروازے کا ذکر کیا جس کی چوڑائی ستر سال کی مسافت کے برابر ہے ( راوی کو شک ہو گیا ہے یہ کہا یا یہ کہا ) کہ دروازے کی چوڑائی اتنی ہو گی ؛ سوار اس میں چلے گا تو چالیس سال یا ستر سال میں ایک سرے سے دوسرے سرے تک پہنچے گا، سفیان ( راوی ) کہتے ہیں: یہ دروازہ شام کی جانب پڑے گا، جب اللہ نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو پیدا کیا ہے تبھی اللہ نے یہ دروازہ بھی بنایا ہے اور یہ دروازہ توبہ کرنے والوں کے لیے کھلا ہوا ہے اور ( توبہ کا یہ دروازہ ) اس وقت تک بند نہ ہو گا جب تک کہ سورج اس دروازہ کی طرف سے ( یعنی پچھم سے ) طلوع نہ ہونے لگے۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے۔

So have you retained anything from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concerning that?’ He said: ‘Yes, when we were travelers, he (ﷺ) used to order us not to remove our Khuff for three days and nights, except from sexual impurity, but not from defecation, urination, and sleep.’” He said: “So I said: ‘So have you memorized anything from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) concerning love?’ He said: ‘Yes, we were in one of our journeys with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) when a man, a harsh, foolish Bedouin, who had been at the end of the group, called him with a loud voice, saying: “O Muhammad! O Muhammad!” So the people said to him “Mah! Indeed, you have been prohibited from this.” So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) responded to him with similar to his voice: “Come.” So he said: “A man loves a people but he has not reached them?” He said: ‘So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A man is with whomever he loves.”’ Zirr said: “He did not cease reporting to me until he had reported that Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has appointed a gate in the west - its width is the distance of a seventy-year journey - for repentance: it shall not be locked until the sun rises from its direction, and that is the Statement of Allah, Blessed be He and Most High, of the Ayah: The Day some of the signs of your Lord come, no soul shall be benefited by its believing.”

Ibn `Umar narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Indeed Allah accepts the repentance of a slave as long as (his soul does not reach his throat).”

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah is more delighted with the repentance of one of you, than one of you is, when finding his lost animal.”

Abu Sirmah narrated from Abu Ayyub, that: when death reached him, he said: “I have concealed something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) from you. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: ‘If you did not sin, Allah would create a creation that would sin, so He will forgive them.’”

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah, Blessed is He and Most High, said: ‘O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky, then you sought forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you, and I would not mind. So son of Adam! If you came to me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness nearly as great as it.’”

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Allah created a hundred mercies, and He placed one mercy among his creation, they show mercy to one another by it, and there are ninety-nine mercies with Allah.”
