An-Nu'man bin Bashir said: Allah's Messenger would straighten our lines. One day he came out and saw a man whose chest was protruding from the people, so he said: 'You must straighten your lines, or Allah will cause disagreement to occur among your faces.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُسَوِّي صُفُوفَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَخَرَجَ يَوْمًا فَرَأَى رَجُلًا خَارِجًا صَدْرُهُ عَنِ الْقَوْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللَّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْبَرَاءِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَجَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وعَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ النُّعْمَانِ بْنِ بَشِيرٍ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مِنْ تَمَامِ الصَّلَاةِ إِقَامَةُ الصَّفِّ وَرُوِيَ عَنْ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُوَكِّلُ رِجَالًا بِإِقَامَةِ الصُّفُوفِ فَلَا يُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى يُخْبَرَ أَنَّ الصُّفُوفَ قَدِ اسْتَوَتْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَرُوِيَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعُثْمَانَ أَنَّهُمَا كَانَا يَتَعَاهَدَانِ ذَلِكَ وَيَقُولَانِ:‏‏‏‏ اسْتَوُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ تَقَدَّمْ يَا فُلَانُ تَأَخَّرْ يَا فُلَانُ.

نعمان بن بشیر رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہماری صفیں سیدھی کرتے تھے۔ چنانچہ ایک دن آپ نکلے تو دیکھا کہ ایک شخص کا سینہ لوگوں سے آگے نکلا ہوا ہے، آپ نے فرمایا: ”تم اپنی صفیں سیدھی رکھو ۱؎ اور نہ اللہ تمہارے درمیان اختلاف پیدا فرما دے گا“ ۲؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- نعمان بن بشیر رضی الله عنہما کی حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- اس باب میں جابر بن سمرہ، براء، جابر بن عبداللہ، انس، ابوہریرہ اور عائشہ رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۳- نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے یہ بھی مروی ہے کہ آپ نے فرمایا: صفیں سیدھی کرنا نماز کی تکمیل ہے، ۴- عمر رضی الله عنہ سے مروی ہے کہ وہ صفیں سیدھی کرنے کا کام کچھ لوگوں کے سپرد کر دیتے تھے تو مؤذن اس وقت تک اقامت نہیں کہتا جب تک اسے یہ نہ بتا دیا جاتا کہ صفیں سیدھی ہو چکی ہیں، ۵- علی اور عثمان رضی الله عنہما سے بھی مروی ہے کہ یہ دونوں بھی اس کی پابندی کرتے تھے اور کہتے تھے: «استووا» ”صف میں سیدھے ہو جاؤ“ اور علی رضی الله عنہ کہتے تھے: فلاں! آگے بڑھو، فلاں! پیچھے ہٹو۔

Abdullah (Ibn Masud) narrated that : the Prophet said: Let those among you with understanding and reason be close to me, then those after them, then those after them. And do not separate or dissention will occur among your hearts, and beware of the commotion of the markets.

Abdul-Hamid bin Mahmud said: We prayed behind one of the Amirs, the people compelled us such that we prayed between two columns. When we had prayed, Anas bin Malik said: 'We would be prevented from this during the time of Allah's Messenger.'

Hilal bin Yasar said: Ziyad bin Abi Al-Ja'd took me by the hand while we were in Ar Raqqah, he made me stand before a Shaikh who was called Wabisah bin Ma'bad, from Bani Asad. Ziyad said: 'This Shaikh narrated to me that a prayed alone behind the row' - and the Shaikh was listening - 'so Allah's Messenger ordered him to repeat the Salat.'
