Abdullah (bin Mas'ud] narrated: The idolaters kept Allah's Messenger distracted from four prayers on the Day of Al-Khandaq (the battle of the Trench) until as much as Allah willed of the night had passed. So he ordered Bilal to call the Adhan, then he called the Iqamah to Zuhr, then he called the Iqamah to pray Asr, then he called the Iqamah to pray Maghrib, then he called the Iqamah to pray Isha.

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ نَافِعِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْعُودٍ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ الْمُشْرِكِينَ شَغَلُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ أَرْبَعِ صَلَوَاتٍ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَمَرَ بِلَالًا فَأَذَّنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الظُّهْرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الْعَصْرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الْمَغْرِبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَصَلَّى الْعِشَاءَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَجَابِرٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَيْسَ بِإِسْنَادِهِ بَأْسٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِلَّا أَنَّ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ الَّذِي اخْتَارَهُ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ فِي الْفَوَائِتِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنْ يُقِيمَ الرَّجُلُ لِكُلِّ صَلَاةٍ إِذَا قَضَاهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنْ لَمْ يُقِمْ أَجْزَأَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ قَوْلُ الشَّافِعِيِّ.

ابوعبیدہ بن عبداللہ بن مسعود سے روایت ہے کہ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ نے کہا: مشرکین نے رسول اللہ صلی الله علیہ وسلم کو خندق کے دن چار نمازوں سے روک دیا۔ یہاں تک کہ رات جتنی اللہ نے چاہی گزر گئی، پھر آپ نے بلال کو حکم دیا تو انہوں نے اذان کہی، پھر اقامت کہی تو آپ صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے ظہر پڑھی، پھر بلال رضی الله عنہ نے اقامت کہی تو آپ نے عصر پڑھی، پھر بلال رضی الله عنہ نے اقامت کہی تو آپ نے مغرب پڑھی، پھر انہوں نے اقامت کہی تو آپ صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے عشاء پڑھی۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- اس باب میں ابوسعید اور جابر رضی الله عنہما سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۲- عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث کی سند میں کوئی برائی نہیں ہے سوائے اس کے کہ ابوعبیدہ نے اپنے باپ عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی الله عنہ سے نہیں سنا ہے، ۳- اور چھوٹی ہوئی نمازوں کے سلسلے میں بعض اہل علم نے اسی کو پسند کیا ہے کہ آدمی جب ان کی قضاء کرے تو ہر نماز کے لیے الگ الگ اقامت کہے ۱؎ اور اگر وہ الگ الگ اقامت نہ کہے تو بھی وہ اسے کافی ہو گا، اور یہی شافعی کا قول ہے۔

Jabir bin Abdullah narrated: On the Day of Al-Khandaq (the battle of the Trench), Umar bin Al-Khattab came cursing the disbelievers of Quraish and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! I could not offer he Asr prayer until the sun was about to set.' The Prophet said: 'By Allah! I too have not offered the Salat.' So he said: We descended into Buthan, Allah's Messenger performed Wudu and we too performed Wudu. Allah's Messenger prayed Asr after the sun had set, then after it he prayed Maghrib.

Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated that : Allah's Messenger said: Salatul-Wusta is the Asr prayer.

Smurah bin Jundub narrated that : the Prophet said: Salatul-wusta is the Asr prayer.

Ibn Abbas narrated: I head more than one of the Companions of the Prophet; Umar bin Al-Khattab among, and he was one of the most beloved among them to me - (narrating) that Allah's Messenger prohibited the Salat after Fajr until the sun had risen, and the Salat after Asr until the sun had set.

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Prophet only performed the two rak'ah (units of prayer) after Asr because some wealth came to him which distracted him from the two rak'ah after Zuhr, so he prayed them after Asr, then he did not repeat that.
