Jabir bin Abdullah narrated: On the Day of Al-Khandaq (the battle of the Trench), Umar bin Al-Khattab came cursing the disbelievers of Quraish and said: 'O Allah's Messenger! I could not offer he Asr prayer until the sun was about to set.' The Prophet said: 'By Allah! I too have not offered the Salat.' So he said: We descended into Buthan, Allah's Messenger performed Wudu and we too performed Wudu. Allah's Messenger prayed Asr after the sun had set, then after it he prayed Maghrib.

وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ بُنْدَارٌ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو سَلَمَةَ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَجَعَلَ يَسُبُّ كُفَّارَ قُرَيْشٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَا كِدْتُ أُصَلِّي الْعَصْرَ حَتَّى تَغْرُبَ الشَّمْسُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ وَاللَّهِ إِنْ صَلَّيْتُهَا ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَنَزَلْنَا بُطْحَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتَوَضَّأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَوَضَّأْنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْعَصْرَ بَعْدَ مَا غَرَبَتِ الشَّمْسُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا الْمَغْرِبَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.

جابر بن عبداللہ رضی الله عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنہ نے خندق کے روز کفار قریش کو برا بھلا کہتے ہوئے کہا کہ اللہ کے رسول! میں عصر نہیں پڑھ سکا یہاں تک کہ سورج ڈوبنے کے قریب ہو گیا، تو رسول اللہ صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اللہ کی قسم! میں نے اسے ( اب بھی ) نہیں پڑھی ہے“، وہ کہتے ہیں: پھر ہم وادی بطحان میں اترے تو رسول اللہ صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے وضو کیا اور ہم نے بھی وضو کیا، پھر رسول اللہ صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے سورج ڈوب جانے کے بعد پہلے عصر پڑھی پھر اس کے بعد مغرب پڑھی۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: یہ حدیث حسن صحیح ہے ۱؎۔

Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrated that : Allah's Messenger said: Salatul-Wusta is the Asr prayer.

Ibn Abbas narrated: I head more than one of the Companions of the Prophet; Umar bin Al-Khattab among, and he was one of the most beloved among them to me - (narrating) that Allah's Messenger prohibited the Salat after Fajr until the sun had risen, and the Salat after Asr until the sun had set.

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Prophet only performed the two rak'ah (units of prayer) after Asr because some wealth came to him which distracted him from the two rak'ah after Zuhr, so he prayed them after Asr, then he did not repeat that.

Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrated that : the Prophet said: Between every two calls (to prayer) there is a Salat for whoever wills.

Abu Hurairah narrated that : the Prophet said: Whoever catches a Rak'ah of Subh before the sun has risen, then he has caught Subh. Whoever catches a Rak'ah of Asr before the sun has set, then he has caught Asr.
