Smurah bin Jundub narrated that : the Prophet said: Salatul-wusta is the Asr prayer.

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدَبٍ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ . قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ عَلِيٍّ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَائِشَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَحَفْصَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَبِي هَاشِمِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدَبٍ حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ سَمِعَ مِنْهُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ سَمُرَةَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى حَسَنٌ وصَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ قَوْلُ أَكْثَرِ الْعُلَمَاءِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَغَيْرِهِمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وقَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَائِشَةُ:‏‏‏‏ صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الظُّهْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنُ عُمَرَ:‏‏‏‏ صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الصُّبْحِ. حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا قُرَيْشُ بْنُ أَنَسٍ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ الشَّهِيدِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ لِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سِيرِينَ:‏‏‏‏ سَلِ الْحَسَنَ مِمَّنْ سَمِعَ حَدِيثَ الْعَقِيقَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَأَلْتُهُ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ سَمُرَةَ بْنِ جُنْدَبٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ وأَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل، حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمَدِينِيِّ، عَنْ قُرَيْشِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ عَلِيٌّ:‏‏‏‏ وَسَمَاعُ الْحَسَنِ مِنْ سَمُرَةَ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاحْتَجَّ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ.

سمرہ بن جندب رضی الله عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ نبی اکرم صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ” «صلاة وسطیٰ» عصر کی صلاۃ ہے“ ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- «صلاة وسطیٰ» کے سلسلہ میں سمرہ کی حدیث حسن ہے، ۲- اس باب میں علی، عبداللہ بن مسعود، زید بن ثابت، عائشہ، حفصہ، ابوہریرہ اور ابوہاشم بن عقبہ رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۳- محمد بن اسماعیل بخاری کہتے ہیں کہ علی بن عبداللہ ( ابن المدینی ) کا کہنا ہے: حسن بصری کی حدیث جسے انہوں نے سمرہ بن جندب سے روایت کیا ہے، صحیح حدیث ہے، جسے انہوں نے سمرۃ سے سنا ہے، ۴- صحابہ کرام اور ان کے علاوہ دیگر لوگوں میں سے اکثر اہل علم کا یہی قول ہے، زید بن ثابت اور عائشہ رضی الله عنہا کا کہنا ہے کہ «صلاة وسطیٰ» ظہر کی صلاۃ ہے، ابن عباس اور ابن عمر رضی الله عنہم کہتے ہیں کہ «صلاة وسطیٰ» صبح کی صلاۃ ( یعنی فجر ) ہے ۲؎، ۵- وہ حبیب بن شہید کہتے ہیں کہ مجھ سے محمد بن سیرین نے کہا کہ تم حسن بصری سے پوچھو کہ انہوں نے عقیقہ کی حدیث کس سے سنی ہے؟ تو میں نے ان سے پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نے اسے سمرہ بن جندب سے سنا ہے، ۶- محمد بن اسماعیل بخاری کہتے ہیں کہ علی ابن المدینی نے کہا ہے کہ سمرہ رضی الله عنہ سے حسن کا سماع صحیح ہے اور انہوں نے اسی حدیث سے دلیل پکڑی ہے۔

Ibn Abbas narrated: I head more than one of the Companions of the Prophet; Umar bin Al-Khattab among, and he was one of the most beloved among them to me - (narrating) that Allah's Messenger prohibited the Salat after Fajr until the sun had risen, and the Salat after Asr until the sun had set.

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Prophet only performed the two rak'ah (units of prayer) after Asr because some wealth came to him which distracted him from the two rak'ah after Zuhr, so he prayed them after Asr, then he did not repeat that.

Abdullah bin Mughaffal narrated that : the Prophet said: Between every two calls (to prayer) there is a Salat for whoever wills.

Abu Hurairah narrated that : the Prophet said: Whoever catches a Rak'ah of Subh before the sun has risen, then he has caught Subh. Whoever catches a Rak'ah of Asr before the sun has set, then he has caught Asr.

Ibn Abbas said: Allah's Messenger combined the Zuhr and Asr (prayers), and the Maghrib and Isha (prayers) in Al-Madinah, without being in a state of fear, nor due to rain.
