Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri narrated that: The Messenger of Allah said: Whenever you see a funeral (procession), stand up (for it). Whoever follows it, then do not sit down until it is put down.

حَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ، وَالْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْخَلَّالُ الحلواني، قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ الدَّسْتُوَائِيُّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْجَنَازَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُومُوا لَهَا فَمَنْ تَبِعَهَا فَلَا يَقْعُدَنَّ حَتَّى تُوضَعَ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ فِي هَذَا الْبَابِ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ قَوْلُ:‏‏‏‏ أَحْمَدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ تَبِعَ جَنَازَةً فَلَا يَقْعُدَنَّ حَتَّى تُوضَعَ عَنْ أَعْنَاقِ الرِّجَالِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدْ رُوِيَ عَنْ بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَغَيْرِهِمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يَتَقَدَّمُونَ الْجَنَازَةَ فَيَقْعُدُونَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْتَهِيَ إِلَيْهِمُ الْجَنَازَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ قَوْلُ:‏‏‏‏ الشَّافِعِيِّ.

ابو سعید خدری رضی الله عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”جب تم جنازہ دیکھو تو اس کے لیے کھڑے ہو جایا کرو۔ اور جو اس کے ساتھ جائے وہ ہرگز نہ بیٹھے جب تک کہ جنازہ رکھ نہ دیا جائے“۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- ابو سعید خدری کی حدیث اس باب میں حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- یہی احمد اور اسحاق بن راہویہ کا بھی قول ہے۔ یہ کہتے ہیں کہ جو کسی جنازے کے ساتھ جائے، وہ ہرگز نہ بیٹھے جب تک کہ جنازہ لوگوں کی گردنوں سے اتار کر رکھ نہ دیا جائے، ۳- صحابہ کرام وغیرہم میں سے بعض اہل علم سے مروی ہے کہ وہ جنازے کے آگے جاتے تھے اور جنازہ پہنچنے سے پہلے بیٹھ جاتے تھے۔ اور یہی شافعی کا قول ہے۔

Abu Eisa said: The Hadith of 'Ali is a Hasan Sahih Hadith, regarding which there are narrations from four of the Tabi'in narrating it from each other. This is acted upon according to some of the people of knowledge. Ash-Shafi'i said: This is the most correct thing on this topic This Hadith abrogates first Hadith: Whenever you see a funeral (procession), stand up [for it]. Ahmad said: If he wants, he stands, and if he wants, he does not stand. His proof is that it has been reported that the Prophet (ﷺ) stood, then sat, and this is what Ishaq bin Ibrahim said. (Abu Eisa said:) As for the saying of 'Ali: The Prophet (ﷺ) stood for the funeral and then sat, he means that the Prophet (ﷺ) would stand when he saw a funeral (procession), then he did not do so later, so he would not stand when he saw the funeral (procession).
