Abu Wa'il narrated: Ali said to Abu Al-Hayyaj Al-Asadi: 'I am dispatching you with what the Prophet dispatched me: That you not leave an elevated grave without leveling it, nor an image without erasing it.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا، قَالَ لِأَبِي الْهَيَّاجِ الْأَسَدِيّ:‏‏‏‏ أَبْعَثُكَ عَلَى مَا بَعَثَنِي بِهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ أَنْ لَا تَدَعَ قَبْرًا مُشْرِفًا إِلَّا سَوَّيْتَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَا تِمْثَالًا إِلَّا طَمَسْتَهُ . قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرٍ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ عَلِيٍّ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالْعَمَلُ عَلَى هَذَا عِنْدَ بَعْضِ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَكْرَهُونَ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ الْقَبْرُ فَوْقَ الْأَرْضِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ:‏‏‏‏ أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يُرْفَعَ الْقَبْرُ إِلَّا بِقَدْرِ مَا يُعْرَفُ أَنَّهُ قَبْرٌ لِكَيْلَا يُوطَأَ وَلَا يُجْلَسَ عَلَيْهِ.

ابووائل شقیق بن سلمہ کہتے ہیں کہ علی رضی الله عنہ نے ابوالہیاج اسدی سے کہا: میں تمہیں ایک ایسے کام کے لیے بھیج رہا ہوں جس کے لیے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھے بھیجا تھا: ”تم جو بھی ابھری قبر ہو، اسے برابر کئے بغیر اور جو بھی مجسمہ ہو ۱؎، اسے مسمار کئے بغیر نہ چھوڑنا“ ۲؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں: ۱- علی کی حدیث حسن ہے، ۲- اس باب میں جابر سے بھی روایت ہے، ۳- بعض اہل علم کا اسی پر عمل ہے۔ وہ قبر کو زمین سے بلند رکھنے کو مکروہ ( تحریمی ) قرار دیتے ہیں، ۴- شافعی کہتے ہیں کہ قبر کے اونچی کئے جانے کو میں مکروہ ( تحریمی ) سوائے اتنی مقدار کے جس سے معلوم ہو سکے کہ یہ قبر ہے تاکہ وہ نہ روندی جائے اور نہ اس پر بیٹھا جائے۔

Ibn Abbas narrated: The Messenger of Allah passed by the graves of Al-Madinah, so he turned his face towards them and said: (As-Salamu alaikum ya ahlul-qubur! Yaghfirul-lahu lana wa lakun, antum salafuna wa nahnu bil-athar.) 'Peace be upon you O inhabitants of the grave! May Allah forgive us and you; you are our predecessors and we are to follow you.'

Sulaiman bin Buraidah narrated from his father that: The Messenger of Allah said: I had prohibited you from visiting the graves. But Muhammad was permitted to visit the grave of his mother: so visit them, for they will remind you of the Hereafter.

Abdullah bin Abi Mulaikah said: Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr died in Al-Hubshi He said: He was carried to Makkah to be buried there. So when Aishah arrived she went to the grave of Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakr and she said: We were like two drinking companions of Jadhimah for such a long time that they would say: 'They will never part.' So when we were separated it was as if I and Malik - due to the length of unity - never spent a night together.
