It was narrated that Abu Ghutaif Al-Hudhali said: I was listening to 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin Khattab in the mosque, and when the time for prayer came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. When the time for 'Asr (Afternnon prayer) came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. When the time for Maghrib (Sunset prayer) came, he got up, performed ablution, and offered prayer, then he went back to where he had been sitting. I said: 'May Allah improve you (i.e., your condition) Is it obligatory or Sunnah to perform ablution for every prayer?' He said: 'Did you notice that?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'No (it is not obligatory). If I perform ablution for Morning prayer I can perform all of the prayers with this ablution, so as long as I do not get impure. But I heard the Messenger of Allah say: Whoever performs ablution while he is pure, he will have ten merits. So I wanted to earn the merits.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي غُطَيْفٍ الْهُذَلِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَصَلَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى مَجْلِسِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الْعَصْرُ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَصَلَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى مَجْلِسِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا حَضَرَتِ الْمَغْرِبُ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ وَصَلَّى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ عَادَ إِلَى مَجْلِسِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ أَصْلَحَكَ اللَّهُ أَفَرِيضَةٌ أَمْ سُنَّةٌ الْوُضُوءُ عِنْدَ كُلِّ صَلَاةٍ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَوَ فَطِنْتَ إِلَيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِلَى هَذَا مِنِّي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَوْ تَوَضَّأْتُ لِصَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ لَصَلَّيْتُ بِهِ الصَّلَوَاتِ كُلَّهَا مَا لَمْ أُحْدِثْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَكِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ عَلَى كُلِّ طُهْرٍ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ حَسَنَاتٍ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنَّمَا رَغِبْتُ فِي الْحَسَنَاتِ.

ابوغطیف ہذلی کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے مسجد میں عبداللہ بن عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہما سے ان کی مجلس میں سنا، پھر جب نماز کا وقت ہوا، تو وہ اٹھے وضو کیا، اور نماز ادا کی، پھر مجلس میں دوبارہ حاضر ہوئے، پھر جب عصر کا وقت آیا تو اٹھے وضو کیا، اور نماز پڑھی، پھر اپنی مجلس میں واپس آئے، پھر جب مغرب کا وقت ہوا تو اٹھے وضو کیا، اور نماز ادا کی پھر اپنی مجلس میں دوبارہ حاضر ہوئے تو میں نے کہا: اللہ آپ کو سلامت رکھے، کیا یہ وضو ( ہر نماز کے لیے ) فرض ہے یا سنت؟ کہا: کیا تم نے میرے اس کام کو سمجھ لیا اور یہ سمجھا ہے کہ یہ میں نے اپنی طرف سے کیا ہے؟ میں نے کہا: جی ہاں، بولے: نہیں، ( ہر نماز کے لیے وضو کرنا فرض نہیں ) اگر میں نماز فجر کے لیے وضو کرتا تو اس سے وضو نہ ٹوٹنے تک ساری نماز پڑھتا، لیکن میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا ہے: جس شخص نے وضو ہوتے ہوئے وضو کیا، تو اس کے لیے دس نیکیاں ہیں ، اور مجھ کو ان نیکیوں ہی کا شوق ہے۔

Abbad bin Tamim narrated that his paternal uncle said: A complaint was made to the Prophet about a man who sensed something (some doubt about his ablution) during prayer. He said: 'No (he does not have to perform ablution) unless he notices a smell or hears a sound.'

It was narrated from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that his father said: I heard the Messenger of Allah being asked about water in the wilderness that is frequented by beasts and predators. The Messenger of Allah said: If the water reaches the amount of two Qullah, nothing can make it impure (Najis).' (Sahih) Another chain with similar wording.
