It was narrated that 'Amr bin 'Ata' said: I saw Sa'ib bin Yazid sniffing his garment, and I said: 'Why (are you doing) that?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah say: No ablution (is needed) unless there is an odor or a sound.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ عَيَّاشٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ عَطَاءٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ رَأَيْتُ السَّائِبَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ يَشُمُّ ثَوْبَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ مِمَّ ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ لَا وُضُوءَ إِلَّا مِنْ رِيحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ سَمَاعٍ .
محمد بن عمرو بن عطاء کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے سائب بن یزید رضی اللہ عنہما کو اپنا کپڑا سونگھتے دیکھا، میں نے پوچھا: اس کا سبب کیا ہے؟ تو انہوں نے کہا کہ میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے سنا: بغیر بو سونگھے یا آواز سنے وضو واجب نہیں ہے ۱؎۔

It was narrated from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that his father said: I heard the Messenger of Allah being asked about water in the wilderness that is frequented by beasts and predators. The Messenger of Allah said: If the water reaches the amount of two Qullah, nothing can make it impure (Najis).' (Sahih) Another chain with similar wording.

It was narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri that: The Prophet was asked about the water basins located between Makkah and Al-Madinah, which were visited by wild animals, dogs and donkeys, and about using them for means of purification. He said: Whatever they (the animals) have carried in their bellies is for them, and whatever is left over is for us, and is pure.

It was narrated that Jabir bin 'Abdullah said: We came to a pond in which there was the carcass of a donkey, so we refrained from using the water until the Messenger of Allah came to us and said: 'Water is not made impure by anything.' Then we drank from it and gave it to our animals to drink, and we carried some with us.
