Abu Al-Minhal said: I asked Al-Bara bin 'Azib and Zaid bin Arqam and they said: 'We were merchants at the time of the Messenger of Allah and we asked the Prophet of Allah about money exchange. He said: If it is done hand to hand there is nothing wrong with it, but if it is done on credit then it is not right.

أَخْبَرَنِي إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَعَامِرُ بْنُ مُصْعَبٍ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا أَبَا الْمِنْهَالِ،‏‏‏‏ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ الْبَرَاءَ بْنَ عَازِبٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَزَيْدَ بْنَ أَرْقَمَ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَا:‏‏‏‏ كُنَّا تَاجِرَيْنِ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ فَسَأَلْنَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّرْفِ ؟،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنْ كَانَ يَدًا بِيَدٍ فَلَا بَأْسَ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنْ كَانَ نَسِيئَةً فَلَا يَصْلُحُ .

ابومنہال کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے براء بن عازب اور زید بن ارقم رضی اللہ عنہما سے پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانے میں ہم دونوں تاجر تھے، ہم نے آپ سے بیع صرف ( اثمان کی خرید و فروخت ) کے بارے میں پوچھا، تو آپ نے فرمایا: ”اگر وہ نقدا نقد ہو تو کوئی حرج نہیں اور اگر ادھار ہو تو یہ صحیح نہیں“۔

So I asked Zaid and he said: 'Ask Al-Bara for he is better than me and more knowledgeable.' And they both said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade (selling) silver for gold on credit. '

Abdur-Rahman bin Abi Bakrah narrated that his father said: The Messenger of Allah forbade selling silver for silver and gold for gold, unless it was of equal amounts. And he told us to sell gold for silver however we wanted, and silver for gold however we wanted.

He said: 'I did not find it in the Book of Allah, nor did I hear it from the messenger of Allah, rather Usamah bin Zaid told me that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Riba is only in credit. '

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: I used to sell camels at Al-Baqi and I would sell Dinars in exchange for Dirhams. I came to the Prophet in the house of Hafsah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I want to ask you: I sell camels in Al-Baqi and I sell Dinars in exchange for Dirhams. He said: 'There is nothing wrong with it if you take the price on that day, unless you depart when there is still unfinished business between you both (buyer and seller). '
