Abu Hurairah said: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to observe Itikaf during ten days of Ramadan every year. But when the year in which he died, he observed Itikaf for twenty days.
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي حُصَيْنٍ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَعْتَكِفُ كُلَّ رَمَضَانَ عَشَرَةَ أَيَّامٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْعَامُ الَّذِي قُبِضَ فِيهِ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ يَوْمًا .
ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہر رمضان میں دس دن اعتکاف کرتے تھے، لیکن جس سال آپ کا انتقال ہوا اس سال آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے بیس دن کا اعتکاف کیا۔

Aishah said: When the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم observed Itikaf, he would put his head near me, and I would comb it. and he entered the house only to fulfill human needs (i. e. to urinate or to relieve himself).

Safiyyah said: When the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was observing Itikaf (in the mosque), I would come to him to visit him. I had a talk with him and then stood up. I then returned and he (the Prophet) also stood up to accompany me (to my house). Her dwelling place was in the house of Usamah bin Zaid. Two men from the Ansar (helpers) passed (by him at the moment). When they saw the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, they walked quickly. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Be at ease, she is Safiyyah daughter of Huyayy. They said: Be glory to Allah, Messenger of Allah! He said: Satan runs in man like blood. I feared he might inspire something in your mind, or he said: evil (the narrator doubted).

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The sunnah for one who is observing Itikaf (in a mosque) is not to visit a patient, or to attend a funeral, or touch or embrace one's wife, or go out for anything but necessary purposes. There is no Itikaf without fasting, and there is no Itikaf except in a congregational mosque.
