Ibn Abbas said: When the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم on the day of Ashurah and commanded us to fast on it, they (i. e. Companions) said: Messenger of Allah, this is a day which is considered great by Jews and Christians ? The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When the next year comes, we shall fast on the 9th of Muharram. But the next year the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم breathed his last.

حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْمَهْرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنَ أُمَيَّةَ الْقُرَشِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا غَطَفَانَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَبَّاسٍ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ حِينَ صَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَأَمَرَنَا بِصِيَامِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنَّهُ يَوْمٌ تُعَظِّمُهُ الْيَهُودُ وَالنَّصَارَى. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِذَا كَانَ الْعَامُ الْمُقْبِلُ صُمْنَا يَوْمَ التَّاسِعِ . فَلَمْ يَأْتِ الْعَامُ الْمُقْبِلُ حَتَّى تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ جس وقت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عاشوراء کے دن کا روزہ رکھا اور ہمیں بھی اس کے روزہ رکھنے کا حکم فرمایا تو لوگوں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! یہ ایسا دن ہے کہ یہود و نصاری اس دن کی تعظیم کرتے ہیں، یہ سن کر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اگلے سال ہم نویں محرم کا بھی روزہ رکھیں گے ، لیکن آئندہ سال نہیں آیا کہ آپ وفات فرما گئے

Al-Hakam bin al-Araj said: I came to Ibn Abbas who was leaning against his sheet of cloth in the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram). I asked him about fasting on the day of Ashurah. He said: When you sight the moon of al-Muharram, count (the days). When the 9th of Muharram comes, fast from the morning. I said: Would Muhammad صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم observe this fast ? He replied: Thus Muhammad صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to fast.

Narrated Abdur Rahman ibn Maslamah: Abdur Rahman reported on the authority of his uncle that the people of the tribe Aslam came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. He said (to them): Did you fast on this day? They replied: No. He said: Complete the rest of your day, and make atonement for it.

Abdullah bin 'And (bin al-As) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to me: The fast most liked by Allah is the one observed by Dawud (David), and the prayer dearer to Allah is the one offered by Dawud (David): he would sleep half the night, and stand (in prayer) one-third of it, and sleep one-sixth of it. He would go without fasting one day, and fast the other day.

Narrated Qatadah Ibn Malhan al-Qaysi: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to command us to fast the days of the white (nights): thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the month. He said: This is like keeping perpetual fast.

Narrated Hafsah, Ummul Muminin: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to fast three days every month: Monday, Thursday and Monday in the next week.

Narrated Umm Salamah, Ummul Muminin: Hunaydah al-Khuzai reported on the authority of her mother who said: I entered upon Umm Salamah and asked her about fasting. She said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to command me to fast three days every month beginning with Monday or Thursday.
