Narrated Abdur Rahman ibn Maslamah: Abdur Rahman reported on the authority of his uncle that the people of the tribe Aslam came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. He said (to them): Did you fast on this day? They replied: No. He said: Complete the rest of your day, and make atonement for it.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمِنْهَالِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَسْلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَمِّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ أَسْلَمَ أَتَتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ صُمْتُمْ يَوْمَكُمْ هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ لَا. قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَتِمُّوا بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِكُمْ وَاقْضُوهُ. قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ يَعْنِي يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ .

عبدالرحمٰن بن مسلمہ اپنے چچا سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہ قبیلہ اسلم کے لوگ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے، آپ نے پوچھا: کیا تم لوگوں نے اپنے اس دن کا روزہ رکھا ہے؟ جواب دیا: نہیں، فرمایا: دن کا بقیہ حصہ بغیر کھائے پئے پورا کرو اور روزے کی قضاء کرو ۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: یعنی عاشوراء کے دن۔

Abdullah bin 'And (bin al-As) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to me: The fast most liked by Allah is the one observed by Dawud (David), and the prayer dearer to Allah is the one offered by Dawud (David): he would sleep half the night, and stand (in prayer) one-third of it, and sleep one-sixth of it. He would go without fasting one day, and fast the other day.

Narrated Qatadah Ibn Malhan al-Qaysi: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to command us to fast the days of the white (nights): thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the month. He said: This is like keeping perpetual fast.
