Al-Hakam bin al-Araj said: I came to Ibn Abbas who was leaning against his sheet of cloth in the Sacred Mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram). I asked him about fasting on the day of Ashurah. He said: When you sight the moon of al-Muharram, count (the days). When the 9th of Muharram comes, fast from the morning. I said: Would Muhammad صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم observe this fast ? He replied: Thus Muhammad صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to fast.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ بْنِ غَلَّابٍ. ح وحَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنِيحَاجِبُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏جَمِيعًا الْمَعْنَى عَنْ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ الْأَعْرَجِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ وَهُوَ مُتَوَسِّدٌ رِدَاءَهُ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ. فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ. فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتَ هِلَالَ الْمُحَرَّمِ فَاعْدُدْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ التَّاسِعِ فَأَصْبِحْ صَائِمًا . فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ كَذَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَذَلِكَ كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصُومُ.

حکم بن الاعرج کہتے ہیں کہ میں ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوا اس وقت وہ مسجد الحرام میں اپنی چادر کا تکیہ لگائے ہوئے تھے، میں نے عاشوراء کے روزے سے متعلق ان سے دریافت کیا تو انہوں نے کہا: جب تم محرم کا چاند دیکھو تو گنتے رہو اور نویں تاریخ آنے پر روزہ رکھو، میں نے پوچھا: محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھی اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے؟ تو انہوں نے کہا: ( ہاں ) محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم بھی اسی طرح روزہ رکھتے تھے ۱؎۔

Narrated Abdur Rahman ibn Maslamah: Abdur Rahman reported on the authority of his uncle that the people of the tribe Aslam came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. He said (to them): Did you fast on this day? They replied: No. He said: Complete the rest of your day, and make atonement for it.

Abdullah bin 'And (bin al-As) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to me: The fast most liked by Allah is the one observed by Dawud (David), and the prayer dearer to Allah is the one offered by Dawud (David): he would sleep half the night, and stand (in prayer) one-third of it, and sleep one-sixth of it. He would go without fasting one day, and fast the other day.

Narrated Qatadah Ibn Malhan al-Qaysi: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to command us to fast the days of the white (nights): thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of the month. He said: This is like keeping perpetual fast.
