Al-Mughirah bin Shubah said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم lagged behind (in a journey). He then narrated this story saying: Then we came to people. Abdur-Rahman was leading them in the dawn prayer. When he perceived the presence of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, he intended to retire. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم asked him to continue and I and the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلمoffered one rak’ah of prayer behind him. When he had pronounced the salutation, the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم got up and offered the rak’ah which had been finished before, and he made no addition to it. Abu Dawud said: Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, Ibn al-Zubair and Ibn Umar hold the opinion that whoever gets an odd number of the rak’ahs of prayer, he should perform two prostrations on account of forgetfulness.

حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ تَخَلَّفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَذَكَرَ هَذِهِ الْقِصَّةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَتَيْنَا النَّاسَ وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ يُصَلِّ بِهِمُ الصُّبْحَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا رَأَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَرَادَ أَنْ يَتَأَخَّرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَوْمَأَ إِلَيْهِ أَنْ يَمْضِيَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَصَلَّيْتُ أَنَا وَالنَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَلْفَهُ رَكْعَةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَلَّى الرَّكْعَةَ الَّتِي سُبِقَ بِهَا وَلَمْ يَزِدْ عَلَيْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَابْنُ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُونَ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ أَدْرَكَ الْفَرْدَ مِنَ الصَّلَاةِ عَلَيْهِ سَجْدَتَا السَّهْوِ.

مغیرہ بن شعبہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ( سفر میں لوگوں کی جماعت سے ) پیچھے رہ گئے، پھر انہوں نے اسی واقعہ کا ذکر کیا۔ مغیرہ کہتے ہیں: جب ہم لوگوں کے پاس آئے تو عبدالرحمٰن بن عوف رضی اللہ عنہ انہیں صبح کی نماز پڑھا رہے تھے، جب انہوں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو دیکھا، تو پیچھے ہٹنا چاہا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے انہیں نماز جاری رکھنے کا اشارہ کیا۔ مغیرہ کہتے ہیں: تو میں نے اور نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عبدالرحمٰن بن عوف کے پیچھے ایک رکعت پڑھی، اور جب انہوں نے سلام پھیرا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اٹھ کر وہ رکعت ادا کی جو رہ گئی تھی، اس سے زیادہ کچھ نہیں پڑھا۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: ابو سعید خدری، ابن زبیر، اور ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہم کہتے ہیں: جو شخص امام کے ساتھ نماز کی طاق رکعت پائے، تو اس پر سہو کے دو سجدے ہیں ۱؎۔

Abu Abdur-Rahman al-Sulami said that he witnessed Abdur-Rahman bin Awf asking Bilal about the ablution of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. Bilal said: He went out to relieve himself. Then I brought water for him and he performed ablution, and wiped over his turban and socks.

Abu zurah bin Amr bin Jarir said: Jarir urinated. He then performed ablution and wiped over the socks. He said: What can prevent me from wiping (over the socks); I saw the Messenger of Allah (doing so). They (the people) said: This (action of yours) might be valid before the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah. He replied: I embraced Islam after the revelation of Surat al-Ma’idah.

Narrated Abu Musa al-Ashari: Negus presented to the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم two black and simple socks. He put them on; then he performed ablution and wiped over them. Musaddad reported this tradition from Dulham bin Salih. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by the people of Basrah alone.

Al-Mughirah bin Shubah said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the socks and I said: Messenger of Allah, have you forgotten ? He said: My Lord has commanded me to do this.

Narrated Khuzaymah ibn Thabit: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: The time limit for wiping over the socks for a traveller is three days (and three nights) and for a resident it is one day and one night. Abu Dawud said: Another version adds: Had we requested him to extend (the period of wiping), he would have extended.

Narrated Ubayy ibn Umarah: I asked: Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم may I wipe over the socks? He replied: Yes. He asked: For one day? He replied: For one day. He again asked: And for two days? He replied: For two days too. He again asked: And for three days? He replied: Yes, as long as you wish. Abu Dawud said: Another version says: He asked him about the period until he reached the period of seven days. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم replied: Yes, as long as you wish (i. e. there is no time limit). Abu Dawud said: There is a variance in the chain of narrators of this tradition. The chain is not strong. Another chain from Yahya bin Ayyub is also disputed.
