Narrated Ubayy ibn Umarah: I asked: Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم may I wipe over the socks? He replied: Yes. He asked: For one day? He replied: For one day. He again asked: And for two days? He replied: For two days too. He again asked: And for three days? He replied: Yes, as long as you wish. Abu Dawud said: Another version says: He asked him about the period until he reached the period of seven days. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم replied: Yes, as long as you wish (i. e. there is no time limit). Abu Dawud said: There is a variance in the chain of narrators of this tradition. The chain is not strong. Another chain from Yahya bin Ayyub is also disputed.

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَعِينٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ طَارِقٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَيُّوبَ بْنِ قَطَنٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ عِمَارَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ قَدْ صَلَّى مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِلْقِبْلَتَيْنِ:‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏أَمْسَحُ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَوْمًا ؟، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَوْمًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَيَوْمَيْنِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَيَوْمَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَثَلَاثَةً ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَا شِئْتَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ رَوَاهُ ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَزِينٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي زِيَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ عِمَارَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ فِيهِ حَتَّى بَلَغَ سَبْعًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَا بَدَا لَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ وَقَدِ اخْتُلِفَ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَيْسَ هُوَ بِالْقَوِيِّ،‏‏‏‏وَرَوَاهُ ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيَحْيَى بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ السَّيْلَحِينِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَيَّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَدِ اخْتُلِفَ فِي إِسْنَادِهِ.

ابی بن عمارہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے، یحییٰ بن ایوب کا بیان ہے کہ ابی بن عمارہ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ دونوں قبلوں ( بیت المقدس اور بیت اللہ ) کی طرف نماز پڑھی ہے - آپ نے کہا کہ اللہ کے رسول! کیا میں موزوں پر مسح کروں؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہاں ، ابی نے کہا: ایک دن تک؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ایک دن تک ، ابی نے کہا: اور دو دن تک؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: دو دن تک ، ابی نے کہا: اور تین دن تک؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ہاں، اور اسے تم جتنا چاہو ۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: ابن ابی مریم مصری نے اسے یحییٰ بن ایوب سے یحییٰ نے عبدالرحمٰن بن رزین سے، عبدالرحمٰن نے محمد بن یزید بن ابی زیاد سے، محمد نے عبادہ بن نسی سے، عبادہ نے ابی بن عمارہ سے روایت کیا ہے مگر اس میں ہے: یہاں تک کہ ( پوچھتے پوچھتے ) سات تک پہنچ گئے اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فرماتے گئے: ہاں، جتنا تم چاہو ۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: اس کی سند میں اختلاف ہے، یہ قوی نہیں ہے، اسے ابن ابی مریم اور یحییٰ بن اسحاق سیلحینی نے یحییٰ بن ایوب سے روایت کیا ہے مگر اس کی سند میں بھی اختلاف ہے۔

Narrated Al-Mughirah ibn Shubah: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم performed ablution and wiped over the stockings and shoes. Abu Dawud said: Abdur-Rahman bin Mahdi did not narrate this tradition because the familiar version from al-Mughirah says that the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the socks. Abu Musa al-Ashari has also reported: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over stockings. But the chain of narrators of this tradition is neither continous nor strong. Ali bin Abi Talib, Ibn Masud, al-Bara bin Aziz, Anas bin Malik, Abu Umamah, Sahl bin Saad and Amr bin Huriath also wiped over the stockings.

Narrated Aws ibn Abu Aws ath-Thaqafi: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم performed ablution and wiped over his shoes and feet. Abbad (a sub-narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم came to the well of a people. Musaddad did not mention the words Midat (a place where ablution is performed), and Kazamah (well). Then both agreed on the wording: He performed ablution and wiped over his shoes and feet.

Narrated Al-Mughirah ibn Shubah: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the socks. Another version adds: On the back (upper part) of the socks.

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: If the religion were based on opinion, it would be more important to wipe the under part of the shoe than the upper but I have seen the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiping over the upper part of his shoes.

This tradition has been transmitted through a different chain of narrators. This version adds: “I always preferred to wash the under part of the feet until I saw the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiping the upper part of them.

A mash transmitted this tradition saying: If religion were based on opinion, it would be more proper to wipe the under part of the feet than the upper. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the upper part of his shoes. The narrator Waki said: I saw Ali perform ablution and wash the upper part of his feet, and say: Had I not seen the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم doing like this –and he narrated the tradition in full.
