Narrated Abu Musa al-Ashari: Negus presented to the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم two black and simple socks. He put them on; then he performed ablution and wiped over them. Musaddad reported this tradition from Dulham bin Salih. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by the people of Basrah alone.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا دَلْهَمُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حُجَيْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ أَنَّ النَّجَاشِيَّ أَهْدَى إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خُفَّيْنِ أَسْوَدَيْنِ سَاذَجَيْنِ فَلَبِسَهُمَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ وَمَسَحَ عَلَيْهِمَا ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ دَلْهَمِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا مِمَّا تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ أَهْلُ الْبَصْرَةِ.

بریدہ رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ نجاشی ( اصحمہ بن بحر ) نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں دو سادہ سیاہ موزے ہدیے میں بھیجے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے انہیں پہنا، پھر وضو کیا اور ان پر مسح کیا۔

Al-Mughirah bin Shubah said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the socks and I said: Messenger of Allah, have you forgotten ? He said: My Lord has commanded me to do this.

Narrated Khuzaymah ibn Thabit: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: The time limit for wiping over the socks for a traveller is three days (and three nights) and for a resident it is one day and one night. Abu Dawud said: Another version adds: Had we requested him to extend (the period of wiping), he would have extended.

Narrated Ubayy ibn Umarah: I asked: Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم may I wipe over the socks? He replied: Yes. He asked: For one day? He replied: For one day. He again asked: And for two days? He replied: For two days too. He again asked: And for three days? He replied: Yes, as long as you wish. Abu Dawud said: Another version says: He asked him about the period until he reached the period of seven days. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم replied: Yes, as long as you wish (i. e. there is no time limit). Abu Dawud said: There is a variance in the chain of narrators of this tradition. The chain is not strong. Another chain from Yahya bin Ayyub is also disputed.

Narrated Al-Mughirah ibn Shubah: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم performed ablution and wiped over the stockings and shoes. Abu Dawud said: Abdur-Rahman bin Mahdi did not narrate this tradition because the familiar version from al-Mughirah says that the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over the socks. Abu Musa al-Ashari has also reported: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم wiped over stockings. But the chain of narrators of this tradition is neither continous nor strong. Ali bin Abi Talib, Ibn Masud, al-Bara bin Aziz, Anas bin Malik, Abu Umamah, Sahl bin Saad and Amr bin Huriath also wiped over the stockings.

Narrated Aws ibn Abu Aws ath-Thaqafi: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم performed ablution and wiped over his shoes and feet. Abbad (a sub-narrator) said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم came to the well of a people. Musaddad did not mention the words Midat (a place where ablution is performed), and Kazamah (well). Then both agreed on the wording: He performed ablution and wiped over his shoes and feet.
