Abu Hurairah narrated that : Allah's Messenger said: If it were not that it would be a hardship on my Ummah, then I would have ordered you to delay Isha until the third of the night, or its half.

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ لَوْلَا أَنْ أَشُقَّ عَلَى أُمَّتِي لَأَمَرْتُهُمْ أَنْ يُؤَخِّرُوا الْعِشَاءَ إِلَى ثُلُثِ اللَّيْلِ أَوْ نِصْفِهِ . قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَفِي الْبَاب عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ سَمُرَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَجَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَبِي بَرْزَةَ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَأَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ،‏‏‏‏ وَزَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى:‏‏‏‏ حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهُوَ الَّذِي اخْتَارَهُ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَالتَّابِعِينَ وَغَيْرِهِمْ رَأَوْا تَأْخِيرَ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَبِهِ يَقُولُ أَحْمَدُ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِسْحَاقُ.

ابوہریرہ رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ نبی اکرم صلی الله علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگر میں اپنی امت پر دشوار نہ سمجھتا تو میں عشاء کو تہائی رات یا آدھی رات تک دیر کر کے پڑھنے کا حکم دیتا“ ۱؎۔ امام ترمذی کہتے ہیں : ۱- ابوہریرہ رضی الله عنہ کی حدیث حسن صحیح ہے، ۲- اس باب میں جابر بن سمرہ، جابر بن عبداللہ، ابوبرزہ، ابن عباس، ابو سعید خدری، زید بن خالد اور ابن عمر رضی الله عنہم سے بھی احادیث آئی ہیں، ۳- اور اسی کو صحابہ کرام اور تابعین وغیرہم میں سے اکثر اہل علم نے پسند کیا ہے، ان کی رائے ہے کہ عشاء تاخیر سے پڑھی جائے، اور یہی احمد اور اسحاق بن راہویہ بھی کہتے ہیں۔

Abu Barzah narrated: The Prophet would dislike to sleep before Isha and to talk after it.

Umar bin Al-Khattab narrated: Allah's Messenger would talk during the night with Abu Bakr about matters concerning the Muslims while I was with them.

Umm Farwah - and she was one of those who gave pledge of allegiance to the Prophet - narrated: The Prophet was asked: 'Which deed is the best?' So he said: 'Salat in the beginning of its time.'

Ali bin AbI Talib narrated that : the Prophet said to him: 'Ali! Three are not to be delayed: Salat when its time comes, a funeral whet it (a prepared body) is present, and the (marriage of a) single woman when there is an equal for her.

Ibn Umar narrated that : Allah's Messenger said: The beginning of the time for Salat is pleasing to Allah, and the end of its time is pardoned by Allah.

Abu Amr Ash-Shaibani narrated: A man said to Ibn Mas'ud: 'Which deed is most virtuous?' He said: 'I asked Allah's Messenger (that). He said: Salat at the beginning of its time. I asked him: What is after that O Messenger of Allah? He said: Being dutiful to one's parents. I said: What is after that [O Messenger of Allah]? He said: Jihad in the Way of Allah.
