It was narrated that Jabir said: The Messenger of Allah passed by a man who was performing ablution and washing his leather socks. He gestures with his hand, (and said): 'Rather I have been commanded to wipe them.' The Messenger of Allah gestured with his hand like this, from the tips of the toes to the base of the shin, tracing lines with his fingers.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى الْحِمْصِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَرِيرِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي مُنْذِرٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَابِرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِرَجُلٍ يَتَوَضَّأُ وَيَغْسِلُ خُفَّيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏كَأَنَّهُ دَفَعَهُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا أُمِرْتَ بِالْمَسْحِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدِهِ هَكَذَا:‏‏‏‏ مِنْ أَطْرَافِ الْأَصَابِعِ إِلَى أَصْلِ السَّاقِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَخَطَّطَ بِالْأَصَابِعِ .
جابر رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ایک شخص کے پاس سے گزرے جو وضو کر رہا تھا، اور اپنے دونوں موزوں کو دھو رہا تھا، آپ نے اپنے ہاتھ سے اشارہ کیا، گویا آپ اسے روک رہے ہیں، اور فرمایا: تمہیں تو ( موزوں پر ) صرف مسح کا حکم دیا گیا ہے ، اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنے ہاتھ سے اس طرح کیا یعنی انگلیوں کے کناروں سے خط کھینچتے ہوئے پنڈلیوں کی جڑ تک لے گئے

It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani' said: I asked 'Aishah about wiping over the leather socks and she said: 'Go to 'Ali and ask him, for he knows more about that than I do.' So I went to 'Ali and asked him about wiping. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to tell us that the resident could wipe for one day and one night, and the traveler could do so for three days.'

It was narrated that Khuzaimah bin Thabit said: The Messenger of Allah set a time limit for the traveler of three days, and if the questioner had persisted in asking, he would have made it five (days).

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakrah, from his father, that: The Prophet granted a concession to travelers: If a traveler performed ablution and put on leather socks, then he performed a fresh ablution, he could wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights; the resident could do so for one day and one night.

It was narrated from Ubayy bin 'Imarah, in whose house the Messenger of Allah performed prayer facing both prayer direction, that : He said to the Messenger of Allah: Can I wipe over my leather socks? He said: Yes. He said: For one day? He said: For two days? He said: For three? And so on, until the number reached seven. He (the Prophet) said: For as long as you see fit.
