It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani' said: I asked 'Aishah about wiping over the leather socks and she said: 'Go to 'Ali and ask him, for he knows more about that than I do.' So I went to 'Ali and asked him about wiping. He said: 'The Messenger of Allah used to tell us that the resident could wipe for one day and one night, and the traveler could do so for three days.'

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ الْحَكَمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ الْقَاسِمَ بْنَ مُخَيْمِرَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْشُرَيْحِ بْنِ هَانِئٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ عَنِ الْمَسْحِ عَلَى الْخُفَّيْنِ؟ فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ ائْتِ عَلِيًّا فَسَلْهُ فَإِنَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِذَلِكَ مِنِّي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَتَيْتُعَلِيًّا فَسَأَلْتُهُ عَن الْمَسْحِ؟ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَأْمُرُنَا أَنْ نَمْسَحَ لِلْمُقِيمِ يَوْمًا وَلَيْلَةً، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلِلْمُسَافِرِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ .

شریح بن ہانی رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے موزوں پر مسح کے متعلق پوچھا تو انہوں نے کہا: علی رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس جاؤ، اور ان سے پوچھو، اس لیے کہ وہ اس مسئلہ کو مجھ سے زیادہ بہتر جانتے ہیں، چنانچہ میں علی رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس آیا اور ان سے مسح کے متعلق سوال کیا تو انہوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ہم کو حکم دیتے تھے کہ مقیم ایک دن اور ایک رات، اور مسافر تین دن تک مسح کرے۔

It was narrated that Khuzaimah bin Thabit said: The Messenger of Allah set a time limit for the traveler of three days, and if the questioner had persisted in asking, he would have made it five (days).

It was narrated from Khuzaimah bin Thabit that: The Prophet said: Three days. I think he said, And three nights during which the traveler may wipe over his leather socks.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: They said: 'O Messenger of Allah! What about the purification of the leather socks?' He said: 'For the traveler it is three days and nights, and for the resident it is one day and one night.'

It was narrated from 'Abdur-Rahman bin Abu Bakrah, from his father, that: The Prophet granted a concession to travelers: If a traveler performed ablution and put on leather socks, then he performed a fresh ablution, he could wipe over the leather socks for three days and nights; the resident could do so for one day and one night.

It was narrated from Ubayy bin 'Imarah, in whose house the Messenger of Allah performed prayer facing both prayer direction, that : He said to the Messenger of Allah: Can I wipe over my leather socks? He said: Yes. He said: For one day? He said: For two days? He said: For three? And so on, until the number reached seven. He (the Prophet) said: For as long as you see fit.

It was narrated from 'Uqbah bin 'Amir Al-Juhani that: He came to 'Umar bin Khattab from Egypt. 'Umar said: How long has it been since you have taken off your leather socks? He said: From one Friday to the next. He said: You have acted in accordance with the Sunnah.
