It was narrated that ‘Alqamah bin Waqqas said that a man passed by him, who held a prominent position, and ‘Alqamah said to him: “You have kinship and rights, and I see you entering upon these rulers and speaking to them as Allah wills you should speak. But i heard Bilal bin Harith Al-Muzani, the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), say that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘One of you may speak a word that pleases Allah, and not know how far it reaches, but Allah will record for him as pleasure, until the Day of Resurrection due to that word. And one of you may speak a word that angers Allah, and not know how far it reaches, but Allah will record against him his anger, until the Day he meets Him due to that word.” 'Alqamah said: So look, woe to you, at what you say and what you speak about, for there is something that I wanted to say but I refrained because of what I heard from Bilal bin Harith.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو،‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ وَقَّاصٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَرَّ بِهِ رَجُلٌ لَهُ شَرَفٌ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلْقَمَةُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ لَكَ رَحِمًا وَإِنَّ لَكَ حَقًّا،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنِّي رَأَيْتُكَ تَدْخُلُ عَلَى هَؤُلَاءِ الْأُمَرَاءِ،‏‏‏‏ وَتَتَكَلَّمُ عِنْدَهُمْ بِمَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ تَتَكَلَّمَ بِهِ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ بِلَالَ بْنَ الْحَارِثِ الْمُزَنِيَّ صَاحِبَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ،‏‏‏‏ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ مَا بَلَغَتْ،‏‏‏‏ فَيَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَهُ بِهَا رِضْوَانَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ،‏‏‏‏ وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ سُخْطِ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ مَا يَظُنُّ أَنْ تَبْلُغَ مَا بَلَغَتْ،‏‏‏‏ فَيَكْتُبُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ عَلَيْهِ بِهَا سُخْطَهُ إِلَى يَوْمِ يَلْقَاهُ ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ عَلْقَمَةُ:‏‏‏‏ فَانْظُرْ وَيْحَكَ مَاذَا تَقُولُ،‏‏‏‏ وَمَاذَا تَكَلَّمُ بِهِ،‏‏‏‏ فَرُبَّ كَلَامٍ قَدْ مَنَعَنِي أَنْ أَتَكَلَّمَ بِهِ،‏‏‏‏ مَا سَمِعْتُ مِنْ بِلَالِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ.

علقمہ بن وقاص رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ ان کے سامنے سے ایک معزز شخص کا گزر ہوا، تو انہوں نے اس سے عرض کیا: آپ کا مجھ سے ( دہرا رشتہ ہے ) ایک تو قرابت کا، دوسرے مسلمان ہونے کا، میں آپ کو دیکھتا ہوں کہ آپ ان امراء کے پاس آتے جاتے اور ان سے حسب منشا باتیں کرتے ہیں، میں نے صحابی رسول بلال بن حارث مزنی رضی اللہ عنہ کو یہ کہتے سنا ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: تم میں سے کوئی ایسی بات بولتا ہے جس سے اللہ خوش ہوتا ہے، اور اس کو یہ معلوم نہیں ہوتا کہ اس بات کا اثر کیا ہو گا، لیکن اس بات کی وجہ سے اللہ تعالیٰ اس کے حق میں قیامت تک کے لیے اپنی خوشنودی اور رضا مندی لکھ دیتا ہے، اور تم میں سے کوئی ایسی بات بولتا ہے جو اللہ تعالیٰ کی ناراضگی کا سبب ہوتی ہے، اور اس کو یہ معلوم نہیں ہوتا کہ اس کا کیا اثر ہو گا، لیکن اللہ تعالیٰ اس کے حق میں اپنی ناراضگی اس دن تک کے لیے لکھ دیتا ہے جس دن وہ اس سے ملے گا ۔ علقمہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: دیکھو افسوس ہے تم پر! تم کیا کہتے اور کیا بولتے ہو، بلال بن حارث رضی اللہ عنہ کی حدیث نے بعض باتوں کے کہنے سے مجھے روک دیا ہے، خاموش ہو جاتا ہوں ۱؎۔

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A man may speak a word that angers Allah and not see anything wrong with it, but it will cause him to sink down in Hell the depth of seventy autumns.”

Sufyan bin ‘Abdullah Thaqafi said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me of something that I can adhere to.’ He said: ‘Say: “Allah is my Lord,” then stand straight (adhere steadfastly to Islam).’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is the thing that you fear most for me?’ The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) took hold of his own tongue, then he said: ‘This.’”

It was narrated that Mu’adh bin Jabal said: “I was with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on a journey. One morning I drew close to him when we were on the move and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me of an action that will gain me admittance to Paradise and keep me far away from Hell.’ He said: ‘You have asked for something great, but it is easy for the one for whom Allah makes it easy. Worship Allah and do not associate anything in worship with Him, establish prayer, pay charity, fast Ramadan, and perform Hajj to the House.’ Then he said: ‘Shall I not tell you of the means of goodness? Fasting is a shield, and charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire, and a man’s prayer in the middle of the night.’ Then he recited: “Their sides forsake their beds” until he reached: “As a reward for what they used to do.”[32:16-17] Then he said: ‘Shall I not tell you of the head of the matter, and its pillar and pinnacle? (It is) Jihad.’ Then he said: ‘Shall I not tell you of the basis of all that?’ I said: ‘Yes.’ He took hold of his tongue then said: ‘Restrain this.’ I said: ‘O Prophet of Allah, will we be brought to account for what we say?’ He said: ‘May your mother not found you, O Mu’adh! Are people thrown onto their faces in Hell for anything other than the harvest of their tongues?’”

It was narrated from Umm Habibah, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The words of the son of Adam count against him, not for him, except what is good and forbidding what is evil, and remembering Allah.”

It was narrated that Abu Sha’tha said: “It was said to Ibn ‘Umar: ‘We enter upon our rulers and say one thing, and when we leave we say something else.’ He said: ‘At the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), we used to regard that as hypocrisy.’”
