Ubaid bin 'Umair said: I heard 'Aishah say: The Prophet used to stay with Zainab bint Jahsh and drink honey at her house. Hafsah and I agreed that if the Prophet came to either of us, she would say: 'I detect the smell of Maghafir (a nasty-smelling gum) on you. Have you eaten Maghafir?' He went to one of them and she said that to him. He said: 'No, rather I drank honey at the house of Zainab bint Jahsh, but I will never do it again.' Then the following was revealed: 'O Prophet! Why do you forbid (for yourself) that which Allah has allowed to you' up to: 'If you two turn in repentance to Allah' -'Aishah and Hafsah- 'And (remember) when the Prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives.' refers to him saying: 'No, rather I drank honey.'

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الزَّعْفَرَانِيُّ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ،‏‏‏‏ عَنْ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ زَعَمَ عَطَاءٌ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ عُمَيْرٍ،‏‏‏‏ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ عَائِشَةَ تَزْعُمُ:‏‏‏‏ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَمْكُثُ عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ،‏‏‏‏ فَيَشْرَبُ عِنْدَهَا عَسَلًا،‏‏‏‏ فَتَوَاصَيْتُ أَنَا وَحَفْصَةُ أَنَّ أَيَّتُنَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلْتَقُلْ:‏‏‏‏ إِنِّي أَجِدُ مِنْكَ رِيحَ مَغَافِيرَ،‏‏‏‏ أَكَلْتَ مَغَافِيرَ ؟ فَدَخَلَ عَلَى إِحْدَاهُمَا،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَتْ ذَلِكَ لَهُ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا،‏‏‏‏ بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا عِنْدَ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ،‏‏‏‏ وَلَنْ أَعُودَ لَهُ ،‏‏‏‏ فَنَزَلَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَأَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَا أَحَلَّ اللَّهُ لَكَ إِلَى إِنْ تَتُوبَا إِلَى اللَّهِ سورة التحريم آية 1 - 4 عَائِشَةُ،‏‏‏‏ وَحَفْصَةُ وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ النَّبِيُّ إِلَى بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِهِ حَدِيثًا سورة التحريم آية 3،‏‏‏‏ لِقَوْلِهِ:‏‏‏‏ بَلْ شَرِبْتُ عَسَلًا .

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ام المؤمنین زینب بنت جحش رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس ٹھہرتے اور ان کے پاس شہد پیتے تھے، میں نے اور حفصہ نے آپس میں مشورہ کیا کہ ہم میں سے جس کے پاس نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آئیں تو وہ کہے: مجھے آپ ( کے منہ ) سے مغافیر ۱؎ کی بو محسوس ہو رہی ہے، آپ نے مغافیر کھائی ہے۔ آپ ان دونوں میں سے ایک کے پاس گئے تو اس نے آپ سے یہی کہا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: نہیں، میں نے تو زینب بنت جحش کے پاس شہد پیا ہے اور آئندہ اسے نہیں پیوں گا ۔ تو آیت کریمہ «يا أيها النبي لم تحرم ما أحل اللہ لك» سے ( آیت کا سیاق یہ ہے کہ ) اے نبی جس چیز کو اللہ تعالیٰ نے حلال کر دیا ہے اسے آپ کیوں حرام کرتے ہیں ( التحریم: ۱ ) «‏إن تتوبا إلى اللہ» ( آیت کا سیاق یہ ہے کہ ) ( اے نبی کی بیویو! ) اگر تم دونوں اللہ تعالیٰ کے سامنے توبہ کر لو ( تو بہتر ہے ) ( التحریم: ۴ ) تک نازل ہوئی، اس سے عائشہ اور حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہما مراد ہیں اور آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے قول: میں نے تو شہد پیا ہے ( مگر اب نہیں پیوں گا ) کی وجہ سے آیت کریمہ «وإذ أسر النبي إلى بعض أزواجه حديثا» جب نبی نے اپنی بعض عورتوں سے چپکے سے ایک بات کہی ( التحریم: ۳ ) نازل ہوئی۔

It was narrated that Jabir said: I entered the house of the Prophet with him and there was some bread and vinegar. The Messenger of Allah said: 'Eat; what a good condiment is vinegar.'

It was narrated that Qais bin Abi Gharazah said: At the time of the Messenger of Allah we used to be called Samasir (brokers). The Messenger of Allah came to us when we were selling and called us by a name that was better than that. He said: 'O merchants (Tujjar), this selling involves lies and (false) oaths, so mix some charity with it.'

It was narrated that Qais bin Abi Gharazah said: We used to sell in Al-Baqi, and the Messenger of Allah came to us. We used to be called Samasir (brokers) but he said: 'O merchants!' And called us by a name that was better than our name. Then he said: 'This selling involves (false) oaths and lies, so mix some charity with it.'

It was narrated that Qais bin Abi Gharazah said: The Prophet came to us when we were in the marketplace and said: 'This marketplace is filled with idle talk and (false) oaths, so mix some charity with it.'

It was narrated that Qais bin Abi Gharazah said: In Al-Madinah we used to buy and sell Wasqs (of goods), and we used to call ourselves Samasir (brokers), and the people used to call us like that. The Messenger of Allah came out to us one day, and called us by a name that was better than that which we called ourselves and which the people called us. He said: 'O Tujjar (traders), your selling involves (false) oaths and lies, so mix some charity with it.'

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah forbade vows and said: They do not bring any good; they are just a means of taking wealth from the miserly.
