It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that a man said: O Messenger of Allah, my mother died; will it benefit her if I give in charity on her behalf? He said: Yes. He said: I have a garden and I ask you to bear witness that I am giving it in charity on her behalf.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْأَزْهَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا : زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ إِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ رَجُلًا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ أُمَّهُ تُوُفِّيَتْ أَفَيَنْفَعُهَا إِنْ تَصَدَّقْتُ عَنْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِنَّ لِي مَخْرَفًا فَأُشْهِدُكَ أَنِّي قَدْ تَصَدَّقْتُ بِهِ عَنْهَا.

عبداللہ بن عباس رضی الله عنہا سے روایت ہے کہ ایک شخص نے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! میری ماں کا انتقال ہو گیا ہے اگر میں ان کی طرف سے صدقہ کر دوں تو کیا انہیں اس کا فائدہ پہنچے گا؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ”ہاں“، تو اس نے کہا: پھر تو میرے پاس کھجور کا ایک باغ ہے، آپ کو گواہ بناتا ہوں کہ میں نے اپنی ماں کی طرف سے اسے صدقہ میں دے دیا۔

Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Yazid said: Sufyan narrated to us from Az-Zuhri, from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that Sa'd said: 'My mother died and there was an (outstanding) vow that she had to fulfill. I asked the Prophet and he told me to fulfill it on her behalf.'
