It was narrated from Sa'd bin 'Ubadah that he came to the Prophet and said: My mother has died and she had a vow to fulfill. Will it suffice if I free a slave on her behalf? He said: Free a slave on behalf of your mother.

أَخْبَرَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّهُ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ أُمِّي مَاتَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا نَذْرٌ أَفَيُجْزِئُ عَنْهَا أَنْ أُعْتِقَ عَنْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَعْتِقْ عَنْ أُمِّكَ .

سعد بن عبادہ رضی الله عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ انہوں نے نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آ کر کہا: میری ماں مر چکی ہیں اور ان کے ذمہ ایک نذر ہے، اگر میں ان کی طرف سے ( ایک غلام ) آزاد کر دوں تو کیا یہ ان کی طرف سے پوری ہو جائے گی؟ آپ نے فرمایا: ” ( ہاں ) اپنی ماں کی طرف سے غلام آزاد کر دو“۔

Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Yazid said: Sufyan narrated to us from Az-Zuhri, from 'Ubaidullah bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that Sa'd said: 'My mother died and there was an (outstanding) vow that she had to fulfill. I asked the Prophet and he told me to fulfill it on her behalf.'
