It was narrated that Thumamah bin Hazn Al-Qushairi said: I was present at the house when 'Uthman looked out over them and said: 'I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, are you aware that when the Messenger of Allah came to Al-Madinah, and it had no water that was considered sweet (suitable for drinking) except the well of Rumah, he said: Who will buy the well of Rumah and dip his bucket in it alongside the buckets of the Muslims, in return for a better one in Paradise? and I bought it with my capital and dipped my bucket into it alongside the buckets of the Muslims? Yet today you are preventing me from drinking from it, so that I have to drink salty water.' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, are you aware that I equipped the army of Al-'Usrah (Tabuk) from my own wealth?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, are you aware that when the Masjid became too small for the people and the Messenger of Allah said: Who will buy the plot of the family of so and so and add it to the Masjid, in return for a better plot in Paradise? I bought it with my capital and added it to the Masjid? Yet now you are preventing me from praying two Rak'ahs therein.' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'I adjure you by Allah and by Islam, are you aware that when the Messenger of Allah was atop Thabir -the Thabir in Makkah- and with him were Abu Bakr, 'Umar and myself, the mountain shook, and the Messenger of Allah kicked it with his foot and said: Be still, Thabir, for upon you are a Prophet, a Siddiq and two martyrs?' They said: 'By Allah, yes.' He said: 'Allahu Akbar! They have testified for me, by the Lord of the Ka'bah' -i.e., that I am a martyr.

أَخْبَرَنِي زِيَادُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَامِرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي الْحَجَّاجِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ثُمَامَةَ بْنِ حَزْنٍ الْقُشَيْرِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ شَهِدْتُ الدَّارَ حِينَ أَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ عُثْمَانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْإِسْلَامِ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَيْسَ بِهَا مَاءٌ يُسْتَعْذَبُ غَيْرَ بِئْرِ رُومَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي بِئْرَ رُومَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَيَجْعَلُ فِيهَا دَلْوَهُ مَعَ دِلَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِخَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ ؟ فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ صُلْبِ مَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَعَلْتُ دَلْوِي فِيهَا مَعَ دِلَاءِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنْتُمُ الْيَوْمَ تَمْنَعُونِي مِنَ الشُّرْبِ مِنْهَا حَتَّى أَشْرَبَ مِنْ مَاءِ الْبَحْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّي جَهَّزْتُ جَيْشَ الْعُسْرَةِ مِنْ مَالِي ؟ قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ الْمَسْجِدَ ضَاقَ بِأَهْلِهِ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ يَشْتَرِي بُقْعَةَ آلِ فُلَانٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَيَزِيدُهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ بِخَيْرٍ لَهُ مِنْهَا فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ صُلْبِ مَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَزِدْتُهَا فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنْتُمْ تَمْنَعُونِي أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ فِيهِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُكُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَالْإِسْلَامِ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ تَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عَلَى ثَبِيرٍ ثَبِيرِ مَكَّةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَعَهُ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعُمَرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتَحَرَّكَ الْجَبَلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَكَضَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِرِجْلِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اسْكُنْ ثَبِيرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْكَ نَبِيٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصِدِّيقٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَشَهِيدَانِ ؟ قَالُوا:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏شَهِدُوا لِي وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَعْنِي:‏‏‏‏ أَنِّي شَهِيدٌ.

ثمامہ بن حزن قشیری سے روایت ہے، وہ کہتے ہیں کہ میں اس وقت عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کے گھر موجود تھا جب انہوں نے اوپر سے جھانک کر لوگوں کو مخاطب کرتے ہوئے کہا تھا: میں تم سے اللہ اور اسلام کا واسطہ دے کر پوچھتا ہوں کیا تمہیں معلوم ہے جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مدینہ آئے تو وہاں بئررومہ کے سوا کہیں بھی پینے کا میٹھا پانی نہ تھا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا تھا: ”ہے کوئی جو رومہ کا کنواں خرید کر ( وقف کر کے ) اپنے اور تمام مسلمانوں کے ڈولوں کو یکساں کر دے اس کے عوض اسے جنت میں اس سے بہتر ملے گا“۔ میں نے ( آپ کے اس ارشاد کے بعد ) اسے اپنے ذاتی مال سے خرید کر اپنا ڈول عام مسلمانوں کے ڈول کے ساتھ کر دیا ( یعنی وقف کر دیا اور اپنے لیے کوئی تخصیص نہ کی ) اور آج یہ حال ہے کہ تم لوگ مجھے اس کا پانی پینے نہیں دے رہے ہو، حال یہ ہے کہ میں سمندر کا ( کھارا ) پانی پی رہا ہوں۔ لوگوں نے کہا: ہاں، ( اسی طرح ہے ) ( پھر ) انہوں نے کہا: میں تم سے اسلام اور اللہ کا واسطہ دے کر پوچھتا ہوں کیا تم جانتے ہو جیش عسرہ ( ضرورت مند لشکر ) کو میں نے اپنا مال صرف کر کے جنگ میں شریک ہونے کے قابل بنایا تھا۔ ان لوگوں نے کہا: ہاں، ( ایسا ہی ہے ) انہوں نے ( پھر ) کہا: میں تم سے اللہ اور اسلام کی قسم دے کر پوچھتا ہوں کیا تمہیں معلوم ہے مسجد اپنے نمازیوں پر تنگ ہو گئی تھی، آپ نے فرمایا تھا: ”کون ہے جو فلاں خاندان کی زمین کو خرید کر جنت میں اس سے بہتر پانے کے لیے اسے مسجد میں شامل کر کے مسجد کو مزید وسعت دیدے“۔ تو میں نے اس زمین کے کئی ٹکڑے کو اپنا ذاتی مال صرف کر کے خرید لیا تھا اور مسجد میں اس کا اضافہ کر دیا تھا اور تمہارا حال آج یہ ہے کہ تم لوگ مجھے اس میں دو رکعت نماز پڑھنے تک نہیں دے رہے ہو۔ لوگوں نے کہا: ہاں ( بجا فرما رہے ہیں آپ ) ۔ انہوں نے ( پھر ) کہا: میں تم سے اللہ اور اسلام کا واسطہ دے کر پوچھتا ہوں کیا تم لوگ جانتے ہو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم مکہ کی پہاڑیوں میں سے ایک پہاڑی پر تھے اور آپ کے ساتھ ابوبکر و عمر بھی تھے اور میں بھی تھا، اس وقت وہ پہاڑ ہلنے لگا تھا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے ٹھوکر لگائی اور فرمایا: ”ثبیر! سکون سے رہ، کیونکہ ( یہاں ) تیرے اوپر نبی، صدیق اور دو شہید موجود ہیں“۔ لوگوں نے کہا: اللہ گواہ ہے، ہاں ( آپ ٹھیک کہتے ہیں ) انہوں نے کہا: اللہ اکبر، اللہ بہت بڑا ہے۔ ان لوگوں نے ( میرے شہید ہونے کی ) گواہی دی۔ رب کعبہ کی قسم میں شہید ہوں۔

It was narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman that 'Uthman looked out over them when they besieged him and said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah, on the day when the mountain shook with him, and he kicked it with his foot and said: 'Be still, for there is no one upon you but a Prophet or a Siddiq or two martyrs,' and I was with him. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah, on the day of Bai'at Al-Ridwan, say: 'This is the Hand of Allah and this is the hand of 'Uthman.' Some men responded and affirmed that. He said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah say, on the day of the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk): 'Who will spend and it will be accepted?' And I equipped half of the army from my own wealth. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Who will add to this Masjid in return for a house in Paradise,' and I bought it with my own wealth. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who witness Rumah being sold, and I bought it from my own wealth and allowed wayfarers to use it. Some men responded and affirmed that.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: A man came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what kind of charity brings the greatest reward?' He said: 'To give in charity when you are healthy and feeling miserly, and fearing poverty and hoping for a long life. Do not wait until the (death rattle) reaches the throat and then say: This is for so and so, and it nearly became the property of so and so (the heirs).'

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'For whom among you is the wealth of his heirs dearer to him than his own wealth?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no one among us for whom his own wealth is not dearer to him than the wealth of his heirs.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Know that there is no one among you for whom the wealth of his heirs is not dearer than his own wealth. Your wealth is that which you have sent on ahead, and the wealth of your heirs is that which you have kept.'

It was narrated from Mutarrif, from his father, that the Prophet said: The mutual rivalry (for piling up of worldly things) diverts you, 'Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die).' The son of Adam says: 'My wealth, my wealth,' but your wealth is what you eat and consume, or what you wear and it wears out, or what you give in charity and send on ahead (for the Hereafter).'

Abu Habibah At-Ta'i said: A man made a will leaving some Dinars (to be spent) in the cause of Allah. Abu Ad-Darda' was asked about that, and he narrated that the Prophet said: 'The likeness of the one who frees a slave or gives some charity when he is dying, is that of a man who gives a gift after he has eaten his fill.'
