It was narrated from Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman that 'Uthman looked out over them when they besieged him and said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah, on the day when the mountain shook with him, and he kicked it with his foot and said: 'Be still, for there is no one upon you but a Prophet or a Siddiq or two martyrs,' and I was with him. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who witnessed the Messenger of Allah, on the day of Bai'at Al-Ridwan, say: 'This is the Hand of Allah and this is the hand of 'Uthman.' Some men responded and affirmed that. He said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah say, on the day of the army of Al-'Usrah (i.e. Tabuk): 'Who will spend and it will be accepted?' And I equipped half of the army from my own wealth. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Who will add to this Masjid in return for a house in Paradise,' and I bought it with my own wealth. Some men responded and affirmed that. Then he said: By Allah, I adjure a man who witness Rumah being sold, and I bought it from my own wealth and allowed wayfarers to use it. Some men responded and affirmed that.

أَخْبَرَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ بَكَّارِ بْنِ رَاشِدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا خَطَّابُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاق، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ أَشْرَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِينَ حَصَرُوهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُ بِاللَّهِ رَجُلًا سَمِعَ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ يَوْمَ الْجَبَلِ حِينَ اهْتَزَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَكَلَهُ بِرِجْلِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ اسْكُنْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكَ إِلَّا نَبِيٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ صِدِّيقٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ شَهِيدَانِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَا مَعَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَانْتَشَدَ لَهُ رِجَالٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُ بِاللَّهِ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ بَيْعَةِ الرِّضْوَانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ هَذِهِ يَدُ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَهَذِهِ يَدُ عُثْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَانْتَشَدَ لَهُ رِجَالٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُ بِاللَّهِ رَجُلًا سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمَ جَيْشِ الْعُسْرَةِ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ يُنْفِقُ نَفَقَةً مُتَقَبَّلَةً ؟ فَجَهَّزْتُ نِصْفَ الْجَيْشِ مِنْ مَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَانْتَشَدَ لَهُ رِجَالٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُ بِاللَّهِ رَجُلًا سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ يَزِيدُ فِي هَذَا الْمَسْجِدِ بِبَيْتٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَاشْتَرَيْتُهُ مِنْ مَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَانْتَشَدَ لَهُ رِجَالٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْشُدُ بِاللَّهِ رَجُلًا شَهِدَ رُومَةَ تُبَاعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَاشْتَرَيْتُهَا مِنْ مَالِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَبَحْتُهَا لِابْنِ السَّبِيلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَانْتَشَدَ لَهُ رِجَالٌ ،‏‏‏‏

ابوسلمہ بن عبدالرحمٰن سے روایت ہے، (وہ کہتے ہیں:) کہ جب لوگوں نے عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کے گھر کا محاصرہ کر لیا تو عثمان نے مکان کے اوپر سے نیچے کی طرف جھانکتے ہوئے لوگوں سے کہا: میں اللہ کا واسطہ دے کر اس شخص سے پوچھتا ہوں جس نے پہاڑ کے ہلنے والے دن رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا تھا۔ جب پہاڑ ہلا تھا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے ٹھوکر لگا کر کہا تھا: ”ٹھہرا رہ ( سکون سے رہ ) تیرے اوپر ایک نبی، صدیق اور دو شہید کھڑے ہیں“، ( کوئی اور نہیں ) اس وقت میں آپ کے ساتھ تھا ( یہ سن کر ) بہت سے لوگوں نے ان کی بات کی تصدیق کی، انہوں نے ( پھر ) کہا: میں اللہ کا واسطہ دے کر اسی شخص سے پوچھتا ہوں جو بیعت رضوان کے موقع پر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس موجود تھا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ( اپنے ایک ہاتھ کو دوسرے ہاتھ پر رکھ کر ) فرمایا تھا: ”یہ اللہ کا ہاتھ ہے اور یہ ہاتھ عثمان کا“ ۱؎، تو بہت سے لوگوں نے اس کی تصدیق کی۔ پھر انہوں نے کہا: میں اللہ کا واسطہ دے کر اسی شخص سے پوچھتا ہوں جس نے جیش عسرہ ( تنگ حالی سے دوچار لشکر ) کے دن رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے ہوئے سنا تھا کہ ”کون ہے اللہ کی راہ میں خرچ کرنے والا ایسا خرچ جس کی ( بارگاہ الٰہی میں ) قبولیت یقینی ہے“۔ اس وقت میں نے اپنے ذاتی مال کو خرچ کر کے آدھے لشکر کی ضروریات کو پورا کر کے میدان جنگ میں شریک ہونے کے قابل بنایا تھا تو بےشمار لوگوں نے ان کی اس بات کی تصدیق کی۔ انہوں نے ( پھر ) کہا: میں اس شخص سے اللہ کا واسطہ دے کر پوچھتا ہوں جس نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو یہ فرماتے ہوئے سنا ہے کہ ”کون ہے جو جنت میں ایک گھر کے عوض اس مسجد ( نبوی ) میں توسیع کرتا ہے“۔ میں نے ( یہ سن کر مسجد سے ملی ہوئی زمین ) اپنے پیسوں سے خرید کر مسجد کو کشادہ کر دیا، تو لوگوں نے ان کی اس بات کی بھی تصدیق کی۔ انہوں نے پھر کہا: میں اللہ کو گواہ بنا کر اس شخص سے پوچھتا ہوں جو بئررومہ کی فروختگی کے وقت موجود تھا میں نے اسے اپنا مال دے کر خریدا تھا اور میں نے اسے مسافروں کے لیے عام کر دیا تھا ( جو بھی گزرنے والا اس کا پانی پینا چاہے پیے ) لوگوں نے ان کی اس بات کی بھی تصدیق کی۔

It was narrated that 'Abdur-Rahman Al-Sulami said: When 'Uthman was besieged in his house, the people gathered around his house and he looked out over them and he quoted the same Hadith.

It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: A man came to the Prophet and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what kind of charity brings the greatest reward?' He said: 'To give in charity when you are healthy and feeling miserly, and fearing poverty and hoping for a long life. Do not wait until the (death rattle) reaches the throat and then say: This is for so and so, and it nearly became the property of so and so (the heirs).'

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'For whom among you is the wealth of his heirs dearer to him than his own wealth?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no one among us for whom his own wealth is not dearer to him than the wealth of his heirs.' The Messenger of Allah said: 'Know that there is no one among you for whom the wealth of his heirs is not dearer than his own wealth. Your wealth is that which you have sent on ahead, and the wealth of your heirs is that which you have kept.'

It was narrated from Mutarrif, from his father, that the Prophet said: The mutual rivalry (for piling up of worldly things) diverts you, 'Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die).' The son of Adam says: 'My wealth, my wealth,' but your wealth is what you eat and consume, or what you wear and it wears out, or what you give in charity and send on ahead (for the Hereafter).'

Abu Habibah At-Ta'i said: A man made a will leaving some Dinars (to be spent) in the cause of Allah. Abu Ad-Darda' was asked about that, and he narrated that the Prophet said: 'The likeness of the one who frees a slave or gives some charity when he is dying, is that of a man who gives a gift after he has eaten his fill.'

It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'It is not befitting for a Muslim who has anything concerning which a will should be made, to abide for two nights without having a written will with him.'
