Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: Hafsah bint 'Umar became single when (her husband) Khunais bin Hudhafah As-Sahmi (died). He was one of the Companions of the Prophet, and he died in Al-Madinah. Umar said: I went to 'Uthman bin 'Affan and offered Hafsah in marriage to him. I said: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint 'Umar.' He said: 'I will think about it.' A few days passed, then I met him and he said: 'It seems that I do not want to get married at the moment.' 'Umar said: Then I met Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'If you wish, I will marry Hafsah bint 'Umar to you.' Abu Bakr remained silent, and did not give me any answer, and I felt more upset with him than I had with 'Uthman. Several days passed, then the Messenger of Allah proposed marriage to her and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: 'Perhaps you felt upset with me when you offered Hafsah in marriage to me, and I did not give you any answer?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from giving you an answer when you made the offer to me, except the fact that I had heard the Messenger of Allah speak of her, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah. If he had left her, then I would have married her.'

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْمُبَارَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ صَالِحٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ يُحَدِّثُ،‏‏‏‏ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ حَدَّثَنَا،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَعْنِي:‏‏‏‏ تَأَيَّمَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ مِنْ خُنَيْسِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ السَّهْمِيِّ وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتُوُفِّيَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَتَيْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنْ شِئْتَ أَنْكَحْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِي فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ لَقِيَنِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَدْ بَدَا لِي أَنْ لَا أَتَزَوَّجَ يَوْمِي هَذَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ فَلَقِيتُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنْ شِئْتَ زَوَّجْتُكَ حَفْصَةَ بِنْتَ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَصَمَتَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ إِلَيَّ شَيْئًا فَكُنْتُ عَلَيْهِ أَوْجَدَ مِنِّي عَلَى عُثْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَبِثْتُ لَيَالِيَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَنْكَحْتُهَا إِيَّاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَقِيَنِي أَبُو بَكْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ عَلَيَّ حِينَ عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ حَفْصَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ أَرْجِعْ إِلَيْكَ شَيْئًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِنَّهُ لَمْ يَمْنَعْنِي أَنْ أَرْجِعَ إِلَيْكَ شَيْئًا فِيمَا عَرَضْتَ عَلَيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِلَّا أَنِّي قَدْ كُنْتُ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ ذَكَرَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَمْ أَكُنْ لِأُفْشِيَ سِرَّ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَوْ تَرَكَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَبِلْتُهَا .

عمر بن خطاب رضی الله عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ صحابی رسول خنیس بن حذافہ سہمی رضی اللہ عنہ کا مدینہ میں انتقال ہو گیا، ان کے انتقال سے حفصہ بنت عمر رضی اللہ عنہا بیوہ ہو گئیں، عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: میں عثمان بن عفان رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس آیا اور حفصہ رضی اللہ عنہا کا معاملہ ان کے سامنے پیش کیا، اور کہا کہ اگر آپ پسند کریں تو میں آپ کی شادی حفصہ سے کر دیتا ہوں، انہوں نے کہا: میں اپنے بارے میں غور کر کے بتاؤں گا، میں کئی دن ٹھہرا ( انتظار کرتا ) رہا، پھر وہ مجھ سے ملے اور کہا: میرے غور و فکر میں یہی آیا ہے کہ میں ان دنوں شادی نہ کروں۔ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: پھر میں ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ سے ملا اور کہا: اگر آپ پسند کریں تو حفصہ سے آپ کی شادی کر دوں، ( یہ سن کر ) ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ خاموش رہے، اور مجھے کچھ بھی جواب نہ دیا۔ مجھے ان پر عثمان رضی اللہ عنہ کے مقابل میں زیادہ ہی غصہ آیا، پھر چند ہی راتیں گزری تھیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ان سے اپنے لیے نکاح کا پیغام دیا تو میں نے ان کا نکاح آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ کر دیا۔ پھر مجھے ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ ملے اور کہا: غالباً آپ کو اس وقت بڑا غصہ آیا ہو گا جب آپ نے مجھے حفصہ سے نکاح کی پیشکش کی تھی اور ( میری جانب سے ) آپ کو کوئی جواب نہ ملا، عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے کہا: ہاں، ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بتلایا کہ آپ کی پیش کش کا جواب نہ دینے کی وجہ یہ تھی کہ مجھے معلوم تھا کہ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم حفصہ کا ذکر فرما چکے تھے اور میں آپ کا راز فاش کرنے والا نہیں تھا۔ اگر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ان سے شادی نہ کرتے تو میں انہیں قبول کر لیتا۔

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: A previously married woman has more right to decide about herself (with regard to marriage) than her guardian, and a virgin should be asked for permission with regard to marriage, and her permission is her silence.
