It was narrated from Umm Salamah, that when her 'Iddah had ended, Abu Bakr sent word to her proposing marriage to her, but she did not marry him. Then the Messenger of Allah sent 'Umar bin Al-Khattab with a proposal of marriage. She said: Tell the Messenger of Allah that I am a jealous woman and that I have sons, and none of my guardians are present. He went to the Messenger of Allah and told him that. He said: Go back to her and tell her: As for your saying that you are a jealous woman, I will pray to Allah for you to take away your jealousy. As for your saying that you have sons, your sons will be taken care of. And as for your saying that none of your guardians are present, none of your guardians, present or absent, would object to that. She said to her son: O 'Umar, get up and perform the marriage to the Messenger of Allah, so he performed the marriage.

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ ثَابِتٍ الْبُنَانِيِّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنِي ابْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّتُهَا بَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمْ تَزَوَّجْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَبَعَثَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ يَخْطُبُهَا عَلَيْهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبِرْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ لَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْ لَهَا أَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ غَيْرَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَأَدْعُو اللَّهَ لَكِ فَيُذْهِبُ غَيْرَتَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ إِنِّي امْرَأَةٌ مُصْبِيَةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَتُكْفَيْنَ صِبْيَانَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَمَّا قَوْلُكِ أَنْ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِي شَاهِدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكِ شَاهِدٌ وَلَا غَائِبٌ يَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ لِابْنِهَا:‏‏‏‏ يَا عُمَرُ،‏‏‏‏ قُمْ فَزَوِّجْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَزَوَّجَهُ ،‏‏‏‏ مُخْتَصَرٌ.

ام المؤمنین ام سلمہ رضی الله عنہا سے روایت ہے کہ جب ان کی عدت پوری ہو گئی تو ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے انہیں اپنی شادی کا پیغام بھیجا۔ جسے انہوں نے قبول نہ کیا پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ عنہ کو اپنی شادی کا پیغام دے کر ان کے پاس بھیجا، انہوں نے ( عمر رضی اللہ عنہ سے ) کہا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم تک یہ خبر پہنچا دو کہ میں ایک غیرت مند عورت ہوں ( دوسری بیویوں کے ساتھ رہ نہ پاؤں گی ) بچوں والی ہوں ( ان کا کیا بنے گا ) اور میرا کوئی ولی اور سر پرست بھی موجود نہیں ہے۔ ( جب کہ نکاح کرنے کے لیے ولی بھی ہونا چاہیئے ) عمر رضی اللہ عنہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آئے، آپ کو یہ سب باتیں بتائیں، آپ نے ان سے کہا: ( دوبارہ ) ان کے پاس ( لوٹ ) جاؤ اور ان سے کہو: تمہاری یہ بات کہ میں ایک غیرت مند عورت ہوں ( اس کا جواب یہ ہے کہ ) میں اللہ تعالیٰ سے تمہارے لیے دعا کروں گا، اللہ تمہاری غیرت ( اور سوکنوں کی جلن ) دور کر دے گا، اور اب رہی تمہاری ( دوسری ) بات کہ میں بچوں والی عورت ہوں تو تم ( شادی کے بعد ) اپنے بچوں کی کفایت ( و کفالت ) کرتی رہو گی اور اب رہی تمہاری ( تیسری ) بات کہ میرا کوئی ولی موجود نہیں ہے ( تو میری شادی کون کرائے گا ) تو ایسا ہے کہ تمہارا کوئی ولی موجود ہو یا غیر موجود میرے ساتھ تمہارے رشتہ نکاح کو ناپسند نہ کرے گا ( جب عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے جا کر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کا یہ جواب ان کے سامنے رکھا ) تو انہوں نے اپنے بیٹے عمر بن ابی سلمہ سے کہا: اٹھو اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے ( میرا ) نکاح کر دو، تو انہوں نے ( اپنی ماں کا ) نکاح رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے ساتھ کر دیا، یہ حدیث مختصر ہے۔

Umar bin Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated: Hafsah bint 'Umar became single when (her husband) Khunais bin Hudhafah As-Sahmi (died). He was one of the Companions of the Prophet, and he died in Al-Madinah. Umar said: I went to 'Uthman bin 'Affan and offered Hafsah in marriage to him. I said: 'If you wish, I will marry you to Hafsah bint 'Umar.' He said: 'I will think about it.' A few days passed, then I met him and he said: 'It seems that I do not want to get married at the moment.' 'Umar said: Then I met Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, and said: 'If you wish, I will marry Hafsah bint 'Umar to you.' Abu Bakr remained silent, and did not give me any answer, and I felt more upset with him than I had with 'Uthman. Several days passed, then the Messenger of Allah proposed marriage to her and I married her to him. Abu Bakr met me and said: 'Perhaps you felt upset with me when you offered Hafsah in marriage to me, and I did not give you any answer?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Nothing prevented me from giving you an answer when you made the offer to me, except the fact that I had heard the Messenger of Allah speak of her, and I did not want to disclose the secret of the Messenger of Allah. If he had left her, then I would have married her.'

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Messenger of Allah said: A previously married woman has more right to decide about herself (with regard to marriage) than her guardian, and a virgin should be asked for permission with regard to marriage, and her permission is her silence.
