Narrated 'Amr bin Shu'aib: It was narrated from 'Amr bin Shu'aib, from his father, from his grandfather, that Marthad bin Abi Marthad Al-Ghanawi --a strong man who used to take the prisoners from Makkah to Al-Madinah-- said: I arranged with a man to bring him (from Makkah to Al-Madinah). There was a prostitute in Makkah who was called 'Anaq, and she was his friend. She came out and saw my shadow on the wall, and said: 'Who is this? Marthad? Welcome, O Marthad, come tonight and stay at our place.' I said: 'O 'Anaq, the Messenger of Allah has forbidden adultery.' She said: 'O people of the tents, this porcupine is the one who is taking your prisoners from Makkah to Al-Madinah!' I headed toward (the mountain of) Al-Khandamah, and eight men came after me. They came and stood over my head, and they urinated, and their urine reached me, but Allah caused them not to see me. Then I went to my companion (the prisoner) and brought him to Al-Arak, where I undid his fetters. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I marry 'Anaq?' He remained silent and did not answer me, then the following was revealed: 'And the adulteress-fornicator, none marries her except an adulterer-fornicator or an idolater.' He called me and recited them to me and said: 'Do not marry her.'

أَخْبَرَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ التَّيْمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى هُوَ ابْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْأَخْنَسِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ شُعَيْبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَدِّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ مَرْثَدَ بْنَ أَبِي مَرْثَدٍ الْغَنَوِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ رَجُلًا شَدِيدًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ يَحْمِلُ الْأُسَارَى مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَدَعَوْتُ رَجُلًا لِأَحْمِلَهُ وَكَانَ بِمَكَّةَ بَغِيٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏يُقَالُ لَهَا عَنَاقُ وَكَانَتْ صَدِيقَتَهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏خَرَجَتْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَأَتْ سَوَادِي فِي ظِلِّ الْحَائِطِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ مَنْ هَذَا مَرْثَدٌ مَرْحَبًا وَأَهْلًا يَا مَرْثَدُ انْطَلِقْ اللَّيْلَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَبِتْ عِنْدَنَا فِي الرَّحْلِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا عَنَاقُ،‏‏‏‏ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَرَّمَ الزِّنَا ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَا أَهْلَ الْخِيَامِ هَذَا الدُّلْدُلُ هَذَا الَّذِي يَحْمِلُ أُسَرَاءَكُمْ مِنْ مَكَّةَ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَلَكْتُ الْخَنْدَمَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَطَلَبَنِي ثَمَانِيَةٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجَاءُوا حَتَّى قَامُوا عَلَى رَأْسِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَبَالُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَطَارَ بَوْلُهُمْ عَلَيَّ وَأَعْمَاهُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِّي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَجِئْتُ إِلَى صَاحِبِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَحَمَلْتُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَمَّا انْتَهَيْتُ بِهِ إِلَى الْأَرَاكِ فَكَكْتُ عَنْهُ كَبْلَهُ فَجِئْتُ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْكِحُ عَنَاقَ فَسَكَتَ عَنِّي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَنَزَلَتْ:‏‏‏‏ وَالزَّانِيَةُ لا يَنْكِحُهَا إِلا زَانٍ أَوْ مُشْرِكٌ سورة النور آية 3، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَدَعَانِي فَقَرَأَهَا عَلَيَّ وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا تَنْكِحْهَا .

عبداللہ بن عمرو بن عاص رضی الله عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ مرثد بن ابی مرثد غنوی رضی اللہ عنہ ایک سخت اور زور آور آدمی تھے، قیدیوں کو مکہ سے مدینہ منتقل کیا کرتے تھے۔ وہ کہتے ہیں: میں نے ایک شخص کو بلایا کہ اسے سواری پر ساتھ لیتا جاؤں، مکہ میں عناق نامی ایک بدکار عورت تھی جو ان کی آشنا تھی، وہ ( گھر سے باہر ) نکلی، دیوار کی پرچھائیوں میں میرے وجود کو ( یعنی مجھے ) دیکھا، بولی کون ہے؟ مرثد! خوش آمدید اپنوں میں آ گئے، مرثد! آج رات چلو ہمارے ڈیرے پر ہمارے پاس رات کو سوؤ، میں نے کہا: عناق! رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے زنا کو حرام قرار دے دیا ہے، اس نے کہا: خیمہ والو! یہ دلدل ہے ۱؎ یہ وہ ( پرندہ ) ہے جو تمہارے قیدیوں کو مکہ سے مدینہ اٹھا لے جائے گا ( یہ سن کر ) میں خندمہ ( پہاڑ ) کی طرف بڑھا ( مجھے پکڑنے کے لیے ) میری طلب و تلاش میں آٹھ آدمی نکلے اور میرے سر پر آ کھڑے ہوئے، انہوں نے وہاں پیشاب کیا جس کے چھینٹے مجھ پر پڑے ( اتنے قریب ہونے کے باوجود وہ مجھے دیکھ نہ سکے کیونکہ ) میرے حق میں اللہ نے انہیں اندھا بنا دیا۔ میں ( وہاں سے بچ کر ) اپنے ( قیدی ) ساتھی کے پاس آیا اور اسے سواری پر چڑھا کر چل پڑا۔ پھر جب میں اراک پہنچا تو میں نے اس کی بیڑی کھول دی، پھر میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس حاضر ہوا اور آپ سے کہا: اللہ کے رسول! میں عناق سے شادی کر لوں؟ تو آپ خاموش رہے پھر آیت: «الزانية لا ينكحها إلا زان أو مشرك» ”زنا کار عورت بھی بجز زانی یا مشرک مرد کے اور نکاح نہیں کرتی“۔ ( النور: ۳ ) نازل ہوئی، پھر ( اس کے نزول کے بعد ) رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھے بلایا، مذکورہ آیت پڑھی پھر فرمایا: ”اس سے شادی نہ کرو“ ۲؎۔

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that a man came to the Messenger of Allah and said: I have a wife who is one of the most beloved of the people to me, but she does not object if anyone touches her. He said: Divorce her. He said: I cannot do without her. He said: Then stay with her as much as you need to.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet said: Women are married for four things: their wealth, their nobility, their beauty and their religious commitment. Choose the one who is religiously committed, may your hands be rubbed with dust.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: It was said to the Messenger of Allah: 'Which woman is best?' He said: 'The one who makes him happy when he looks at her, obeys him when he commands her, and she does not go against his wishes with regard to herself nor her wealth.'

Narrated Anas: It was narrated from Anas that they said: O Messenger of Allah, why don't you marry a woman from the Ansar? He said: They are very jealous.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: A man proposed to a woman from among the Ansar and the Messenger of Allah said to him: 'Have you seen her?' He said: 'No.' So he told him to look at her.
