It was narrated that 'Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah came to me one day and said: 'Do you have anything (to eat)?' I said: 'No.' he said: 'Then I am fasting.' Then he came to me after that day, and I had been given some Hais. I had kept some for him as he liked Hais. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we have been given some Hais and I kept some for you.' He said: 'Bring it here. I started the day fasting.' Then he ate some of it, then he said: 'The likeness of a voluntary fast is that of a man who allocated some of his wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it, and if he wishes he may keep it. '

أَخْبَرَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ طَلْحَةَ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ طَلْحَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ هَلْ عِنْدَكُمْ شَيْءٌ ؟ ،‏‏‏‏ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ لَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِنِّي صَائِمٌ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِي بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَقَدْ أُهْدِيَ إِلَيَّ حَيْسٌ فَخَبَأْتُ لَهُ مِنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ يُحِبُّ الْحَيْسَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ! إِنَّهُ أُهْدِيَ لَنَا حَيْسٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَخَبَأْتُ لَكَ مِنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَدْنِيهِ أَمَا إِنِّي قَدْ أَصْبَحْتُ وَأَنَا صَائِمٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَكَلَ مِنْهُ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ صَوْمِ الْمُتَطَوِّعِ مَثَلُ الرَّجُلِ يُخْرِجُ مِنْ مَالِهِ الصَّدَقَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ شَاءَ أَمْضَاهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنْ شَاءَ حَبَسَهَا .

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی الله عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ایک دن میرے پاس آئے، اور پوچھا: ”کیا تمہارے پاس کچھ ( کھانے کو ) ہے؟“ تو میں نے کہا: نہیں، آپ نے فرمایا: ”تو میں روزہ سے ہوں“، اس دن کے بعد پھر ایک دن آپ میرے پاس سے گزرے، اس دن میرے پاس تحفہ میں حیس ۱؎ آیا ہوا تھا، میں نے اس میں سے آپ کے لیے نکال کر چھپا رکھا تھا، آپ کو حیس بہت پسند تھا، انہوں نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! مجھے حیس تحفے میں دیا گیا ہے، میں نے اس میں سے آپ کے لیے چھپا کر رکھا ہے، آپ نے فرمایا: ”لاؤ حاضر کرو، اگرچہ میں نے صبح سے ہی روزہ کی نیت کر رکھی ہے“ ( مگر کھاؤ گا ) تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے کھایا، پھر فرمایا: ”نفلی روزہ کی مثال اس آدمی کی سی ہے جو اپنے مال میں سے ( نفلی ) صدقہ نکالتا ہے، جی چاہا دے دیا، جی چاہا نہیں دیا، روک لیا“۔

It was narrated that 'Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah passed by my door. He said: 'Do you have anything (to eat)?' I said 'I do not have anything.' He said 'Then he passed by my door a second time and we had been given some Hais. I brought it to him and he ate, and I was surprised. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you were fasting, then you ate Hais.' He said: 'Yes, O 'Aishah. The one who observes a fast other than in Ramadan, or making up a missed Ramadan, fast, is like a man who allocated some of is wealth to give in charity; if he wishes he may go ahead and give it, and if he wishes he may keep it. '

He said: I started the day wanting to fast, but then he ate.
