It was narrated from Aishah that Hamzah Al-Aslami asked the Messenger of Allah about fasting while traveling as he was a man who used to fast continually. He said: If you wish then fast and if you wish then do not fast.

أَخْبَرَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْبَأَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ عُرْوَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ حَمْزَةَ الْأَسْلَمِيَّ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّوْمِ فِي السَّفَرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَانَ رَجُلًا يَسْرُدُ الصِّيَامَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنْ شِئْتَ فَصُمْ وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَفْطِرْ .

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی الله عنہا سے روایت ہے کہ حمزہ اسلمی رضی اللہ عنہ نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سفر میں روزہ رکھنے کے بارے میں پوچھا وہ ایک ایسے آدمی تھے جو مسلسل روزہ رکھتے تھے، تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”اگر چاہو تو رکھو، اور اگر چاہو تو نہ رکھو“۔

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: The Messenger Allah went out in the year of the Conquest, fasting during Ramadan. Then when he was in Al-Kadid, he broke his fast.

Ibn 'Abbas said: And the Messenger of Allah fasted and broke his fast while traveling, so whoever wishes may fast, and whoever wishes may not fast.
