It was narrated that Ribi said; the Messenger of Allah said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'When you see the crescent then fast, and when you see it, then stop fasting. If it is too cloudy then complete Shaban as thirty days, unless you see the crescent before that, then fast Ramadan as thirty days, unless you see the new crescent before that. '

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا حِبَّانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ أَرْطَاةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ رِبْعِيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْهِلَالَ فَصُومُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِذَا رَأَيْتُمُوهُ فَأَفْطِرُوا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا شَعْبَانَ ثَلَاثِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِلَّا أَنْ تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ صُومُوا رَمَضَانَ ثَلَاثِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِلَّا أَنْ تَرَوْا الْهِلَالَ قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ .

ربعی کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ”جب تم ( رمضان کا ) چاند دیکھ لو تو روزہ رکھو، اور جب اسے ( عید الفطر کا چاند ) دیکھ لو تو روزہ بند کر دو، ( اور ) اگر تم پر بادل چھا جائیں تو شعبان کے تیس دن پورے کرو، مگر یہ کہ اس سے پہلے چاند دیکھ لو، پھر رمضان کے تیس روزے رکھو، مگر یہ کہ اس سے پہلے چاند دیکھ لو“۔

He had said: 'I will not enter upon them for a month,' because he was so upset with them when Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, informed him of what they had said. When twenty-nine days had passed, he entered upon 'Aishah, so he started with her. Aishah, said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah, you swore not to enter upon us for a month, and now twenty-nine days have passed; we have been counting them.' The Messenger of Allah said; 'The month is twenty-nine days. '
