It was narrated that 'Arfajah said; 'We visited 'Utbah bin Farqad (when he was ill) and we talked about the month of Ramadan. He said; 'What are you talking about?' We said: 'The month of Ramadan. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: In it the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of the Fire are closed, and the devils are chained up, and a caller calls out every night: O doer of good, proceed; O doer of evil, desist! '

أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَرْفَجَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ عُدْنَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ فَرْقَدٍ فَتَذَاكَرْنَا شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا تَذْكُرُونَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قُلْنَا:‏‏‏‏ شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ:‏‏‏‏ تُفْتَحُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَتُغْلَقُ فِيهِ أَبْوَابُ النَّارِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَتُغَلُّ فِيهِ الشَّيَاطِينُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيُنَادِي مُنَادٍ كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ يَا بَاغِيَ الْخَيْرِ هَلُمَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَيَا بَاغِيَ الشَّرِّ أَقْصِرْ ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد الرَّحْمَنِ:‏‏‏‏ هَذَا خَطَأٌ.

عرفجہ کہتے ہیں کہ ہم نے عتبہ بن فرقد کی عیادت کی تو ہم نے ماہ رمضان کا تذکرہ کیا، تو انہوں نے پوچھا: تم لوگ کیا ذکر کر رہے ہو؟ ہم نے کہا: ماہ رمضان کا، تو انہوں نے کہا: میں نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کو فرماتے سنا ہے: ”اس میں جنت کے دروازے کھول دئیے جاتے ہیں، جہنم کے دروازے بند کر دئیے جاتے ہیں، اور شیاطین کو بیڑیاں پہنا دی جاتی ہیں، اور ہر رات منادی آواز لگاتا ہے: اے خیر ( بھلائی ) کے طلب گار! خیر کے کام میں لگ جا ۱؎، اور اے شر ( برائی ) کے طلب گار! برائی سے باز آ جا“ ۲؎۔ ابوعبدالرحمٰن ( امام نسائی ) کہتے ہیں: یہ غلط ہے ۳؎۔

Kuraib narrated that Umm Al-Fadl sent him to Muawiyah in Ash-Sham. He said: I came to Ash-Sham. He said: I came to Ash-Sham and complete her errand. Then the new crescent of Ramadan was sighted while I was in Ash-Sham. I saw the new crescent on the night of Friday, then I came to Al-Madinah at the end of the month. 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas asked me about the sighting of the moon and said: ' When did you see it?' I said: 'We saw it on the night of Friday.' He said; 'You saw it on the ninth of Friday?' I said: 'Yes, and the people saw it and started fasting, and so did Muawiyah. He said: 'But we saw it on the night of Saturday, so we will continue fasting until we have completed thirty days or we see it.' I said: 'Will you not be content with the sighting of Muawiyah and his companions? He said; 'No; this is what the Messenger of Allah enjoined upon us. '

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said; A Bedouin came to the Prphet and said: 'I have sighted the crescent.' He said: 'Do you bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger?' He said: 'Yes.' So the Prophet gave the call saying: 'Fast. '
