Kuraib narrated that Umm Al-Fadl sent him to Muawiyah in Ash-Sham. He said: I came to Ash-Sham. He said: I came to Ash-Sham and complete her errand. Then the new crescent of Ramadan was sighted while I was in Ash-Sham. I saw the new crescent on the night of Friday, then I came to Al-Madinah at the end of the month. 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas asked me about the sighting of the moon and said: ' When did you see it?' I said: 'We saw it on the night of Friday.' He said; 'You saw it on the ninth of Friday?' I said: 'Yes, and the people saw it and started fasting, and so did Muawiyah. He said: 'But we saw it on the night of Saturday, so we will continue fasting until we have completed thirty days or we see it.' I said: 'Will you not be content with the sighting of Muawiyah and his companions? He said; 'No; this is what the Messenger of Allah enjoined upon us. '

أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدٌ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَبِي حَرْمَلَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَخْبَرَنِي كُرَيْبٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ بَعَثَتْهُ إِلَى مُعَاوِيَةَ بِالشَّامِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقَدِمْتُ الشَّامَ فَقَضَيْتُ حَاجَتَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاسْتَهَلَّ عَلَيَّ هِلَالُ رَمَضَانَ وَأَنَا بِالشَّامِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ فِي آخِرِ الشَّهْرِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَأَلَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الْهِلَالَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَتَى رَأَيْتُمْ ؟ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَنْتَ رَأَيْتَهُ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ ؟ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ نَعَمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَرَآهُ النَّاسُ فَصَامُوا وَصَامَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَكِنْ رَأَيْنَاهُ لَيْلَةَ السَّبْتِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَا نَزَالُ نَصُومُ حَتَّى نُكْمِلَ ثَلَاثِينَ يَوْمًا أَوْ نَرَاهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ أَوَ لَا تَكْتَفِي بِرُؤْيَةِ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ ؟ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا هَكَذَا أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ .

کریب مولیٰ ابن عباس کہتے ہیں: ام فضل رضی اللہ عنہا نے انہیں معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس شام بھیجا، تو میں شام آیا، اور میں نے ان کی ضرورت پوری کی، اور میں شام ( ہی ) میں تھا کہ رمضان کا چاند نکل آیا، میں نے جمعہ کی رات کو چاند دیکھا، پھر میں مہینہ کے آخری ( ایام ) میں مدینہ آ گیا، عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے مجھ سے ( حال چال ) پوچھا، پھر پہلی تاریخ کے چاند کا ذکر کیا، ( اور مجھ سے ) پوچھا: تم لوگوں نے چاند کب دیکھا؟ تو میں نے جواب دیا: ہم نے جمعہ کی رات کو دیکھا تھا، انہوں نے ( تاکیداً ) پوچھا: تم نے ( بھی ) اسے جمعہ کی رات کو دیکھا تھا؟ میں نے کہا: ہاں ( میں نے بھی دیکھا تھا ) اور لوگوں نے بھی دیکھا، تو لوگوں نے ( بھی ) روزے رکھے، اور معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے بھی، ( تو ) انہوں نے کہا: لیکن ہم لوگوں نے ہفتے ( سنیچر ) کی رات کو دیکھا تھا، ( لہٰذا ) ہم برابر روزہ رکھیں گے یہاں تک کہ ہم ( گنتی کے ) تیس دن پورے کر لیں، یا ہم ( اپنا چاند ) دیکھ لیں، تو میں نے کہا: کیا معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ اور ان کے ساتھیوں کا چاند دیکھنا کافی نہیں ہے؟ کہا: نہیں! ( کیونکہ ) رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ہمیں ایسا ہی حکم دیا ہے۔

It was narrated that: 'Abdur-Rahman bin Zaid bin Al-Khattab addressed the people on the day concerning which there was doubt (as to whether the month had begun) and said: I sat with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah and asked them, and they a narrated that the Messenger of Allah said: 'Fast when you see it and stop fasting when you see it, and perform the rites on that basis. If it is obscured, then complete thirty days, and if two witnesses testify then fast and stop fasting.
