Al-Bara bin Azib said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to me: When you go to your bed, perform ablution like the ablution for prayer, and then lie on your right side and say: O Allah I have handed over my face to thee, entrusted my affairs to thee, and committed my back to thee out of desire for and fear to thee. There is no refuge and no place of safety from thee except by having recource to thee. I believe in Thy Book which Thou hast sent down and in Thy prophet whom thou hast sent down. He said: If you die (that night), you would die in the true religion, and utter these words in the last of that you utter (other prayers). Al-Bara said: I said: I memorise them, and then I repeated, saying “and in Thy Messenger whom Thou hast sent”. He said: No, say: “and in Thy Prophet whom Thou hast sent.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعْتَمِر، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَمِعْتُ مَنْصُورًا يُحَدِّثُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي الْبَرَاءُ بْنُ عَازِبٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قال لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا أَتَيْتَ مَضْجَعَكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَتَوَضَّأْ وُضُوءَكَ لِلصَّلَاةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ اضْطَجِعْ عَلَى شِقِّكَ الْأَيْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقُلْ:‏‏‏‏ اللَّهُمَّ أَسْلَمْتُ وَجْهِي إِلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَفَوَّضْتُ أَمْرِي إِلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَلْجَأْتُ ظَهْرِي إِلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏رَهْبَةً وَرَغْبَةً إِلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏لَا مَلْجَأَ وَلَا مَنْجَى مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏آمَنْتُ بِكِتَابِكَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَ وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِنْ مِتَّ مِتَّ عَلَى الْفِطْرَةِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَاجْعَلْهُنَّ آخِرَ مَا تَقُولُ،‏‏‏‏ قَالَ الْبَرَاءُ:‏‏‏‏ فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ أَسْتَذْكِرُهُنَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ وَبِرَسُولِكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ،‏‏‏‏ قال:‏‏‏‏ لَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَنَبِيِّكَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلْتَ .

براء بن عازب رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے مجھ سے فرمایا: جب تم اپنی خواب گاہ میں آؤ ( یعنی سونے چلو ) تو وضو کرو جیسے اپنے نماز کے لیے وضو کرتے ہو، پھر اپنی داہنی کروٹ پر لیٹو، اور کہو «اللهم أسلمت وجهي إليك وفوضت أمري إليك وألجأت ظهري إليك رهبة ورغبة إليك لا ملجأ ولا منجى منك إلا إليك آمنت بكتابك الذي أنزلت وبنبيك الذي أرسلت» اے اللہ میں نے اپنی ذات کو تیری تابعداری میں دے دیا، میں نے اپنا معاملہ تیرے سپرد کر دیا، میں نے امید وبیم کے ساتھ تیری ذات پر بھروسہ کیا، تجھ سے بھاگ کر تیرے سوا کہیں اور جائے پناہ نہیں، میں ایمان لایا اس کتاب پر جو تو نے نازل فرمائی ہے، اور میں ایمان لایا تیرے اس نبی پر جسے تو نے بھیجا ہے آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اگر تم ( یہ دعا پڑھ کر ) انتقال کر گئے تو فطرت ( یعنی دین اسلام ) پر انتقال ہوا اور اس دعا کو اپنی دیگر دعاؤں کے آخر میں پڑھو براء کہتے ہیں: اس پر میں نے کہا کہ میں انہیں یاد کر لوں گا، تو میں نے ( یاد کرتے ہوئے ) کہا «وبرسولك الذي أرسلت» تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: ایسا نہیں بلکہ«وبنبيك الذي أرسلت» ( جیسا دعا میں ہے ویسے ہی کہو ) ۔

Al-Bara bin Azib said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said to me: when you go to bed while you are in the state of purification, lay your head on your right hand. He then mentioned the rest of the tradition in a similar manner as above.

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by al-Bara bin Azil from the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم to the same effect through a different chain of narrators. One transmitter said: when you go to your bed while you are in the state of purification. The other said: Perform ablution like the ablution for prayer. He then transmitted the tradition to the effect as Mu’tamir transmitted.

Hudhaifah said: when the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم lay down on his bed (at night), he would say: O Allah! In Thy name I die and live. When he awoke, he said: praise be to Allah who has given us life after causing us to die and to whom we shall be resurrected.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: when any of you goes to his bed, he should dust his bedding with the inner extremity of his lower garment, for he does not know what has come on it since he left it. He should then lie down on his right side and say: In Thy name, my mercy on it, but if Thou lettest it go, guard it with that which Thou guardest Thy upright servants.

Abu Hurairah said: when the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم went to his bed, he used to say: O Allah! Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, Lord of everything, who splittest the grain and the kernel, who hast sent down the Torah, forelock Thou seizes. Thou art the first and there is nothing before thee; Thou art the Last and there is nothing after Thee; Thou art the Outward and there is nothing above Thee; Thou art the Inward and there is nothing below Thee. Wahb added in his version: pay the debt for me and grant me riches instead of poverty.

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to say when he lay down: O Allah, I seek refuge in Thy noble Person and in Thy perfect Words from the evil of what Thou seizest by its forelock; O Allah! Thou removest debt and sin; O Allah! thy troop's not routed, Thy promise is not broken and the riches of the rich do not avail against Thee. Glory and praise be unto Thee!.
