Narrated Salim ibn Ubayd: Hilal ibn Yasar said: We were with Salim ibn Ubayd when a man from among the people sneezed and said: Peace be upon you. Salim said: And upon you and your mother. Later he said: Perhaps you found something (annoying) in what I said to you. He said: I wished you would not mention my mother with good or evil. He said: I have just said to you what the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said. We were in the presence of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم when a man from among the people sneezed, saying: Peace be upon you! The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: And upon you and your mother. He then said: When one of you sneezes, he should praise Allah. He further mentioned some attributes (of Allah), saying: The one who is with him should say to him: Allah have mercy on you, and he should reply to them: Allah forgive us and you.

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مَنْصُورٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ هِلَالِ بْنِ يَسَافٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنَّا مَعَ سَالِمِ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ سَالِمٌ:‏‏‏‏ وَعَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قال بَعْدُ:‏‏‏‏ لَعَلَّكَ وَجَدْتَ مِمَّا قُلْتُ لَكَ،‏‏‏‏ قال:‏‏‏‏ لَوَدِدْتُ أَنَّكَ لَمْ تَذْكُرْ أُمِّي بِخَيْرٍ وَلَا بِشَرٍّ،‏‏‏‏ قال:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّمَا قُلْتُ لَكَ كَمَا قال رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّا بَيْنَا نَحْنُ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذْ عَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ،‏‏‏‏ فقال رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ:‏‏‏‏ وَعَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمِّكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِذَا عَطَسَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَحْمَدِ اللَّهَ،‏‏‏‏ قال:‏‏‏‏ فَذَكَرَ بَعْضَ الْمَحَامِدِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلْيَقُلْ لَهُ مَنْ عِنْدَهُ:‏‏‏‏ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلْيَرُدَّ يَعْنِي عَلَيْهِمْ:‏‏‏‏ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لَنَا وَلَكُمْ .

ہلال بن یساف کہتے ہیں کہ ہم سالم بن عبید کے ساتھ تھے کہ ایک شخص کو چھینک آئی تو اس نے کہا «السلام عليكم» ( تم پر سلامتی ہو ) تو سالم نے کہا: «عليك وعلى أمك» ( تم پر بھی اور تمہاری ماں پر بھی ) پھر تھوڑی دیر کے بعد بولے: شاید جو بات میں نے تم سے کہی تمہیں ناگوار لگی، اس نے کہا: میری خواہش تھی کہ آپ میری ماں کا ذکر نہ کرتے، نہ خیر کے ساتھ نہ شر کے ساتھ، وہ بولے، میں نے تم سے اسی طرح کہا جس طرح رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے کہا، اسی دوران کہ ہم لوگ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس تھے اچانک لوگوں میں سے ایک شخص کو چھینک آئی تو اس نے کہا: «السلام عليكم» رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «عليك وعلى أمك» ، پھر آپ نے فرمایا: جب تم میں سے کسی کو چھینک آئے تو «الحمد الله» کہے اللہ کی تعریف کرے پھر آپ نے حمد کے بعض کلمات کا تذکرہ کیا ( جو چھینک آنے والا کہے ) اور چاہیئے کہ وہ جو اس کے پاس ہو «يرحمك الله» ( اللہ تم پر رحم کرے ) کہے، اور چاہیئے کہ وہ ( چھینکنے والا ) ان کو پھر جواب دے، «يغفر الله لنا ولكم» ( اللہ ہماری اور آپ کی مغفرت فرمائے ) ۔

Narrated Salim ibn Ubayd al-Ashjai: The tradition mentioned above (No. 5013) has also been mentioned by Salim ibn Ubayd al-Ashjai to the same effect from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم through a different chain of narrators.

Abu Hurairah reported the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: When one of you sneezes, he should say: praise be to Allah in every circumstance, and his brother or his companion should say: Allah in every on you! And he should then reply: May Allah guide you well-being.

Narrated Abu Hurairah: Respond three times to your brother when he sneezes, and if he sneezes more often, he has a cold in his head.

The tradition mentioned above has also been transmitted by Abu Hurairah through a different chain from the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. A transmitter Saeed bin Saeed said: I know him that he traced this tradition back to the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. Abu Dawud said: Abu Nuaim transmitted it from Musa bin Qais, from Muhammad bin Ajlan, from Saeed, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, from the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم.

Narrated Ubayd ibn Rifaah az-Zuraqi: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Invoke a blessing on one who sneezes three times; (and if he sneezes more often), then if you wish to invoke a blessing on him, you may invoke, and if you wish (to stop), then stop.

Salamah bin al-Akwa said: when a man sneezed beside the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, he said to him: Allah have mercy on you, but when he sneezed again, he said: The man has a cold in the head.
