Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and said: Messenger of Allah! I have given birth to a boy, and call him Muhammad and Abul Qasim as kunyah (surname), but I have been told that you disapproved of that. He replied: What is it which has made my name lawful and my kunyah unlawful, or what is it which has made my kunyah unlawful and my name lawful?

حَدَّثَنَا النُّفَيْلِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ الْحَجَبِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ جَدَّتِهِ صَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ جَاءَتِ امْرَأَةٌ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَتْ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنِّي قَدْ وَلَدْتُ غُلَامًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَمَّيْتُهُ مُحَمَّدًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكَنَّيْتُهُ:‏‏‏‏ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَذُكِرَ لِي أَنَّكَ تَكْرَهُ ذَلِكَ،‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ مَا الَّذِي أَحَلَّ اسْمِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَحَرَّمَ كُنْيَتِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَوْ مَا الَّذِي حَرَّمَ كُنْيَتِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَحَلَّ اسْمِي .

ام المؤمنین عائشہ رضی اللہ عنہا کہتی ہیں کہ ایک عورت رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آئی اور کہنے لگی: اللہ کے رسول! میرے ایک لڑکا پیدا ہوا ہے، میں نے اس کا نام محمد اور اس کی کنیت ابوالقاسم رکھ دی ہے، تو مجھے بتایا گیا کہ آپ اسے ناپسند کرتے ہیں، آپ نے فرمایا: کیا سبب ہے کہ میرا نام رکھنا درست ہے اور کنیت رکھنا نا درست یا یوں فرمایا: کیا سبب ہے کہ میری کنیت رکھنا نا درست ہے اور نام رکھنا درست؟ ۱؎ ۔

Anas bin Malik said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم used to come to visit us. I had a younger brother who was called Abu ‘Umair by Kunyah (surname). He had a sparrow with which he played, but it died. So one day the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم came to see him and saw him grieved. He asked: What is the matter with him? The people replied: His sparrow has died. He then said: Abu ‘Umair! What has happened to the little sparrow?

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: Aishah said: Messenger of Allah! All my fellow-wives have kunyahs? He said: Give yourself the kunyah by Abdullah, your son - that is to say, her nephew (her sister's son). Musaddad said: Abdullah ibn az-Zubayr. She was called by the kunyah Umm Abdullah. Abu Dawud said: Qurran bin Tammam and Mamar all have transmitted it from Hisham in a similar manner. It has also been transmitted by Abu Usamah from Hisham, from 'Abbad bin Hamzah. Similarly, Hammad bin Salamah and Maslamah bin Qa'nab have narrated it from Hisham, like the tradition transmitted by Abu Usamah.

Narrated Sufyan ibn Asid al-Hadrami: I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم say: It is great treachery that you should tell your brother something and have him believe you when you are lying.
