Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: Abu Zubyan said: A woman who had committed adultery was brought to Umar. He gave orders that she should be stoned. Ali passed by just then. He seized her and let her go. Umar was informed of it. He said: Ask Ali to come to me. Ali came to him and said: Commander of the Faithful, you know that the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: There are three (people) whose actions are not recorded: A boy till he reaches puberty, a sleeper till he awakes, a lunatic till he is restored to reason. This is an idiot (mad) woman belonging to the family of so and so. Someone might have done this action with her when she suffered the fit of lunacy. Umar said: I do not know. Ali said: I do not know.

حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ. ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ الْمَعْنَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْأَبِي ظَبْيَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ هَنَّادٌ الْجَنْبيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أُتِيَ عُمَرُ بِامْرَأَةٍ قَدْ فَجَرَتْ فَأَمَرَ بِرَجْمِهَا فَمَرَّ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَأَخَذَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَخَلَّى سَبِيلَهَا فَأُخْبِرَ عُمَرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ ادْعُوا لِي عَلِيًّا فَجَاءَ عَلِيٌّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَقَدْ عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ رُفِعَ الْقَلَمُ عَنْ ثَلَاثَةٍ:‏‏‏‏ عَنِ الصَّبِيِّ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَنِ النَّائِمِ حَتَّى يَسْتَيْقِظَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعَنِ الْمَعْتُوهِ حَتَّى يَبْرَأَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ مَعْتُوهَةُ بَنِي فُلَانٍ لَعَلَّ الَّذِي أَتَاهَا وَهِيَ فِي بَلَائِهَا قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ:‏‏‏‏ لَا أَدْرِي، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَام وَأَنَا لَا أَدْرِي .

ابوظبیان جنی کہتے ہیں کہ عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس ایک عورت لائی گئی جس نے زنا کا ارتکاب کیا تھا، تو انہوں نے اسے رجم کرنے کا حکم دیا، علی رضی اللہ عنہ کا وہاں سے گزر ہوا، انہوں نے اسے پکڑا اور چھوڑ دیا، تو عمر کو اس کی خبر دی گئی تو انہوں نے کہا: علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو میرے پاس بلاؤ، چنانچہ علی رضی اللہ عنہ آئے اور کہنے لگے: امیر المؤمنین! آپ کو معلوم ہے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا ہے: قلم تین شخصوں سے اٹھا لیا گیا ہے: بچہ سے یہاں تک کہ وہ بالغ ہو جائے، سوئے ہوئے شخص سے یہاں تک کہ وہ بیدار ہو جائے، اور دیوانہ سے یہاں تک کہ وہ اچھا ہو جائے اور یہ تو دیوانی اور پاگل ہے، فلاں قوم کی ہے، ہو سکتا ہے اس کے پاس جو آیا ہو اس حالت میں آیا ہو کہ وہ دیوانگی کی شدت میں مبتلاء رہی ہو، تو عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: مجھے نہیں معلوم کہ وہ اس وقت دیوانی تھی، اس پر علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: مجھے یہ بھی نہیں معلوم کہ وہ نہیں تھی۔

Narrated Ali ibn Abu Talib: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: There are three (persons) whose actions are not recorded: a sleeper till he awakes, a boy till he reaches puberty, and a lunatic till he comes to reason. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Juraij has transmitted it from Al-Qasim bin Yazid on the authority of Ali from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. This version adds: and an old man who is feeble-minded.

Narrated Atiyyah al-Qurazi: I was among the captives of Banu Qurayzah. They (the Companions) examined us, and those who had begun to grow hair (pubes) were killed, and those who had not were not killed. I was among those who had not grown hair.

Ibn Umar said: He was presented before the prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم on the day of Uhd when he was fourteen years old, but he did not allow him (to participate in the battle). He was again presented before him on the day of Khandaq when he was fifteen years old, Then he allowed him.

Narrated Busr ibn Artat: Junadah ibn Abu Umayyah said: We were with Busr ibn Artat on the sea (on an expedition). A thief called Misdar who had stolen a bukhti she-camel was brought. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم say: Hands are not to be cut off during a warlike expedition. Had it not been so, I would have cut it off.
