Abu Umayyah ash-Sha'bani said: I asked Abu Thalabah al-Khushani: What is your opinion about the verse Care for yourselves . He said: I swear by Allah, I asked the one who was well informed about it; I asked the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم about it. He said: No, enjoin one another to do what is good and forbid one another to do what is evil. But when you see niggardliness being obeyed, passion being followed, worldly interests being preferred, everyone being charmed with his opinion, then care for yourself, and leave alone what people in general are doing; for ahead of you are days which will require endurance, in which showing endurance will be like grasping live coals. The one who acts rightly during that period will have the reward of fifty men who act as he does. Another version has: He said (The hearers asked: ) Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty of them? He replied: The reward of fifty of you.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ الْعَتَكِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ أَبِي حَكِيمٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ جَارِيَةَ اللَّخْمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ الشَّعْبَانِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ سَأَلْتُ أَبَا ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا أَبَا ثَعْلَبَةَ كَيْفَ تَقُولُ فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْفُسَكُمْ سورة المائدة آية 105، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ سَأَلْتَ عَنْهَا خَبِيرًا سَأَلْتُ عَنْهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ بَلِ ائْتَمِرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنَاهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَيْتَ شُحًّا مُطَاعًا وَهَوًى مُتَّبَعًا وَدُنْيَا مُؤْثَرَةً وَإِعْجَابَ كُلِّ ذِي رَأْيٍ بِرَأْيِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَعَلَيْكَ يَعْنِي بِنَفْسِكَ وَدَعْ عَنْكَ الْعَوَامَّ فَإِنَّ مِنْ وَرَائِكُمْ أَيَّامَ الصَّبْرِ الصَّبْرُ فِيهِ مِثْلُ قَبْضٍ عَلَى الْجَمْرِ لِلْعَامِلِ فِيهِمْ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ خَمْسِينَ رَجُلًا يَعْمَلُونَ مِثْلَ عَمَلِهِ وَزَادَنِي غَيْرُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَجْرُ خَمْسِينَ مِنْهُمْ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أَجْرُ خَمْسِينَ مِنْكُمْ .

ابوامیہ شعبانی کہتے ہیں کہ میں نے ابوثعلبہ خشنی رضی اللہ عنہ سے پوچھا: ابوثعلبہ! آپ آیت کریمہ «عليكم أنفسكم» کے متعلق کیا کہتے ہیں؟ تو انہوں نے کہا: قسم اللہ کی! تم نے اس کے متعلق ایک جانکار شخص سے سوال کیا ہے، میں نے اس کے متعلق رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے پوچھا ( کہ کیا اس آیت کی رو سے امر بالمعروف اور نہی عن المنکر کی ضرورت باقی نہیں رہی؟ ) تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: نہیں، بلکہ تم بھلی بات کا حکم دو، اور بری بات سے روکو، یہاں تک کہ تم یہ نہ دیکھ لو کہ بخیلی کی تابعداری ہو رہی ہو اور خواہش نفس کی پیروی کی جاتی ہو اور دنیا کو ترجیح دیا جاتا ہو اور ہر صاحب رائے کا اپنی رائے میں مگن ہونا دیکھ لو، تو اس وقت تم اپنی ذات کو لازم پکڑنا اور عوام کو چھوڑ دینا کیونکہ اس کے بعد صبر کے دن ہوں گے ان میں صبر کرنا ایسے ہی ہو گا جیسے چنگاری ہاتھ میں لینا، ان دنوں میں عمل کرنے والے کو پچاس آدمیوں کے برابر جو اسی جیسا عمل کرتے ہوں ثواب ملے گا اور ان کے علاوہ نے اس میں یہ اضافہ کیا ہے کہ صحابہ کرام رضی اللہ عنہم نے عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! کیا یہ ثواب ایسے پچاس شخصوں کا ہو گا جو انہیں میں سے ہوں گے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: نہیں بلکہ تم میں سے پچاس شخصوں کا ۔

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: How will you do when that time will come? Or he said: A time will soon come when the people are sifted and only dregs of mankind survive and their covenants and guarantees have been impaired and they have disagreed among themselves and become thus, interwining his fingers. They asked: What do you order us to do, Messenger of Allah? He replied: Accept what you approve, abandon what you disapprove, attend to your own affairs and leave alone the affairs of the generality. Abu dawud said: A similar tradition has been transmitted by Abdullah bin Amr from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم through different chain.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: When we were around the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, he mentioned the period of commotion (fitnah) saying: When you see the people that their covenants have been impaired, (the fulfilling of) the guarantees becomes rare, and they become thus (interwining his fingers). I then got up and said: What should I do at that time, may Allah make me ransom for you? He replied: Keep to your house, control your tongue, accept what you approve, abandon what you disapprove, attend to your own affairs, and leave alone the affairs of the generality.

Narrated Abu Saeed al-Khudri: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: The best fighting (jihad) in the path of Allah is (to speak) a word of justice to an oppressive ruler.

Narrated Al-Urs bin Amirat al-Kindi: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When sin is done in the earth, he who sees it and disapproves of it will be taken like one who was not present, but he who is not present and approves of it will be like him who sees.
