Abu Umamah at-Taymi said: I was a man who used to give (riding-beasts) on hire for this purpose (for travelling during the pilgrimage) and the people would tell (me): Your hajj is not valid. So I met Ibn Umar and told him: Abu Abdur Rahman, I am a man who gives (riding-beast) on hire for this purpose (i. e. for hajj), and the people tell me: Your hajj is not valid. Ibn Umar replied: Do you not put on ihram (the pilgrim dress), call the talbiyah (labbayk), circumambulate the Kabah, return from Arafat and lapidate jamrahs? I said: Why not? Then he said: Your hajj is valid. a man came to the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and asked him the same question you have asked me. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم kept silence and did not answer him till this verse came down: It is no sin for you that you seek the bounty of your Lord. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم sent for him and recited this verse to him and said: Your hajj is valid.

حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَاحِدِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُمَامَةَ التَّيْمِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ كُنْتُ رَجُلًا أُكَرِّي فِي هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَكَانَ نَاسٌ يَقُولُونَ لِي:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَكَ حَجٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَقِيتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏إِنِّي رَجُلٌ أُكَرِّي فِي هَذَا الْوَجْهِ وَإِنَّ نَاسًا يَقُولُونَ لِي إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ لَكَ حَجٌّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ:‏‏‏‏ أَلَيْسَ تُحْرِمُ وَتُلَبِّي وَتَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ وَتُفِيضُ مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ وَتَرْمِي الْجِمَارَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ قُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ بَلَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَإِنَّ لَكَ حَجًّا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ مِثْلِ مَا سَأَلْتَنِي عَنْهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَسَكَتَ عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ:‏‏‏‏ لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا فَضْلا مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ سورة البقرة آية 198، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَكَ حَجٌّ .

ابوامامہ تیمی کہتے ہیں کہ میں لوگوں کو سفر حج میں کرائے پر جانور دیتا تھا، لوگ کہتے تھے کہ تمہارا حج نہیں ہوتا، تو میں ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما سے ملا اور ان سے عرض کیا: ابوعبدالرحمٰن! میں حج میں لوگوں کو جانور کرائے پر دیتا ہوں اور لوگ مجھ سے کہتے ہیں تمہارا حج نہیں ہوتا، تو ابن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا: کیا تم احرام نہیں باندھتے؟ تلبیہ نہیں کہتے؟ بیت اللہ کا طواف نہیں کرتے؟ عرفات جا کر نہیں لوٹتے؟ رمی جمار نہیں کرتے؟ میں نے کہا: کیوں نہیں، تو انہوں نے کہا: تمہارا حج درست ہے، ایک شخص نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں آیا اور اس نے آپ سے اسی طرح کا سوال کیا جو تم نے مجھ سے کیا تو آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے سکوت فرمایا اور اسے کوئی جواب نہیں دیا یہاں تک کہ آیت کریمہ «ليس عليكم جناح أن تبتغوا فضلا من ربكم» تم پر کوئی گناہ نہیں اس میں کہ تم اپنے رب کا فضل ڈھونڈو نازل ہوئی تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اسے بلا بھیجا اور اسے یہ آیت پڑھ کر سنائی اور فرمایا: تمہارا حج درست ہے ۔

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The people used to trade, in the beginning, at Mina, Arafat, the market place of Dhul-Majaz, and during the season of hajj. But (later on) they became afraid of trading while they were putting on ihram. So Allah, glory be to Him, sent down this verse: It is no sin for you that you seek the bounty of your Lord during the seasons of hajj. Ubayd ibn Umayr told me that he (Ibn Abbas) used to recite this verse in his codex.

Abdullah bin Abbas said: In the beginning when Hajj was prescribed, people used to trade during Hajj. The narrator then narrated the rest of the tradition upto the words, `season of Hajj’.

Ibn Abbas said the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was at al-Rawha. There he met some riders. He saluted them and asked who they were. They replied that they were Muslims. They asked who are you. They (the companions) replied he is the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. A woman became upset: she took her child by his arm and lifted him from her litter at the camel. She said Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم can this (child) be credited with having performed Hajj. He replied Yes, and you will have a reward.

Ibn Umar said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم appointed the following places for putting on Ihram: Dhul al-Hulaifah for the people of Madina, al-Juhfah for the people of Syria and al-Qarn for the people of Najd and have been told that appointed Yalamlam for the people of Yemen.

Ibn Abbas and Tawus reported: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم appointed places for putting on Ihram and narrated the rest of the tradition to the same effect (as mentioned above). One of them said and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. The other narrator said Alamlam. These (places for Ihram) are appointed for these regions and for people of other regions who come to them intending to perform Hajj and Umrah. The place where those who live nearer to Makkah should put on Ihram from where they start and so on up to the inhabitants of Makkah itself who put on Ihram in it. This is the version of Ibn Tawus.
