Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: There was an eclipse of the sun in the time of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم stood up and he was not going to perform bowing till he bowed; and he was not going to raise his head till he raised (after bowing); and he was not going to prostrate himself till he prostrated himself; and he was not going to raise his head till he raised (at the end of prostration); he did similarly in the second rak'ah, he then puffed in the last prostration saying; Fie, Fie! He then said: My Lord, didst Thou not promise me that Thou wouldst not punish them so long as I will remain among them? Didst Thou not promise me that Thou will not punish them so long as they continue to beg pardon of Thee. The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم finished the prayer, and the sun was clear. The narrator then narrated the tradition (in full).

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ أَبِيهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ انْكَسَفَتِ الشَّمْسُ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْكَعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَكَعَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَسْجُدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَفَعَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَسْجُدُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ سَجَدَ فَلَمْ يَكَدْ يَرْفَعُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ رَفَعَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَفَعَلَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الْأُخْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ نَفَخَ فِي آخِرِ سُجُودِهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ:‏‏‏‏ أُفْ أُفْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏ثُمَّ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ رَبِّ أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَلَمْ تَعِدْنِي أَنْ لَا تُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَفَرَغَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ وَقَدْ أَمْحَصَتِ الشَّمْسُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسَاقَ الْحَدِيثَ.

عبداللہ بن عمرو رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے زمانہ میں سورج گرہن لگا، تو آپ نماز کسوف کے لیے کھڑے ہوئے تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رکوع ہی نہیں کریں گے، پھر رکوع کیا تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم رکوع سے سر اٹھائیں گے ہی نہیں، پھر سر اٹھایا تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سجدہ ہی نہیں کریں گے، پھر سجدہ کیا تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سجدے سے سر ہی نہیں اٹھائیں گے، پھر سجدے سے سر اٹھایا تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سجدہ ہی نہیں کریں گے، پھر سجدہ کیا تو ایسا لگا کہ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سجدے سے سر ہی نہیں اٹھائیں گے، پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے سجدہ سے سر اٹھایا، پھر دوسری رکعت میں بھی ایسے ہی کیا، پھر اخیر سجدے میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پھونک ماری اور اف اف کہا: پھر فرمایا: اے میرے رب! کیا تو نے مجھ سے یہ وعدہ نہیں کیا ہے کہ تو انہیں عذاب نہیں دے گا جب تک میں ان میں رہوں گا؟ کیا تو نے مجھ سے یہ وعدہ نہیں کیا ہے کہ تو انہیں عذاب نہیں دے گا جب تک وہ استغفار کرتے رہیں گے؟ ، پھر رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نماز سے فارغ ہوئے اور حال یہ تھا کہ سورج بالکل صاف ہو گیا تھا، پھر راوی نے پوری حدیث بیان کی۔

Narrated Abdur-Rahman bin Samurah: During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم I was shooting some arrows when an eclipse of the sun tok place. I, therefore, threw them (the arrows) away and said: I must see how the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم acts in a solar eclipse today. So I came to him; he was standing (in prayer) raising his hands, glorifying Allah, praising Him, acknowledging that He is the only Deity, and making supplication till the sun was clear. He then recited two surahs and prayed two rak'ahs.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: Ubaydullah ibn an-Nadr reported on the authority of his father: Darkness prevailed in the time of Anas ibn Malik, I came to Anas and said (to him): Abu Hamzah, did anything like this happen to you in the time of the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم? He replied: Take refuge in Allah. If the wind blew violently, we would run quickly towards the mosque for fear of the coming of the Day of Judgment.

Ikrimah said: Ibn Abbas was informed that so-and-so, a certain wife of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, had died. He fell down prostrating himself. He was questioned: Why do you prostrate yourself this moment? He said: The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When you see a portent (an accident), prostrate yourselves. And which portent (accident) can be greater than the death of a wife of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم.

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The prayer was prescribed as consisting of two rak'ahs both when one was resident and when travelling. The prayer while travelling was left according to the original prescription and the prayer of one who was resident was enhanced.

Narrated Yala bin Umayyah: I remarked to Umar al-Khattab: Have you seen the shortening of the prayer by the people today while Allah has said: If you fear that those who are infidels may afflict you , whereas those days are gone now? He replied: I have wondered about the same matter for which you wondered. So I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. He said: It is an act of charity which Allah has done to you, so accept his charity.

The above mentioned tradition has also been narrated through a different chain of transmitters by Abdullah bin Abi Ammar who narrated it in like manner. Abu Dawud said: This has been transmitted by Abu Asim and Hammad bin MAsadah as transmitted by Ibn Bakr.
