Yala bin Shaddad bin Aws said: I came to Muawiyah in Jerusalem. He led us in the Friday prayer. I saw that most of the people in the mosque were the Companions of the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. I saw them sitting in ihtiba condition, i. e. sitting on hips erecting the feet and sticking them to the stomach and holding them with hands or tying them with a cloth to the back, while the imam was giving sermon. Abu Dawud said: Ibn Umar used to sit in ihtiba position while the imam gave the Friday sermon. Anas bin Malik, Shuraih, Sa'sa'ah bin Sawhan, Saeed bin al-Musayyib, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, Makhul, Ismail, Ismail bin Muhammad bin Saad, and Nu'aim bin Sulamah said: There is no harm in sitting in ihtiba position. Abu Dawud said: I do not know whether anyone considered it disapproved except Ubadah bin Nasayy.

حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ رُشَيْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ الرَّقِّيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الزِّبْرِقَانِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ يَعْلَى بْنِ شَدَّادِ بْنِ أَوْسٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ شَهِدْتُ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ بَيْتَ الْمَقْدِسِ فَجَمَّعَ بِنَا فَنَظَرْتُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَإِذَا جُلُّ مَنْ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَصْحَابُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَرَأَيْتُهُمْ مُحْتَبِينَ وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ . قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ كَانَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ يَحْتَبِي وَالْإِمَامُ يَخْطُبُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَأَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَشُرَيْحٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَصَعْصَعَةُ بْنُ صُوحَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَسَعِيدُ بْنُ الْمُسَيِّبِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَإِبْرَاهِيمُ النَّخَعِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمَكْحُولٌ،‏‏‏‏وَإِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَنُعَيْمُ بْنُ سَلَامَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ لَا بَأْسَ بِهَا. قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُد:‏‏‏‏ وَلَمْ يَبْلُغْنِي أَنَّ أَحَدًا كَرِهَهَا إِلَّا عُبَادَةَ بْنَ نُسَيٍّ.

یعلیٰ بن شداد بن اوس کہتے ہیں میں معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کے ساتھ بیت المقدس میں حاضر ہوا تو انہوں نے ہمیں جمعہ کی نماز پڑھائی تو میں نے دیکھا کہ مسجد میں زیادہ تر لوگ نبی اکرم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے اصحاب ہیں اور میں نے انہیں امام کے خطبہ دینے کی حالت میں گوٹ مار کر بیٹھے دیکھا۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ عنہما بھی امام کے خطبہ دینے کی حالت میں گوٹ مار کر بیٹھتے تھے اور انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ، شریح، صعصہ بن صوحان، سعید بن مسیب، ابراہیم نخعی، مکحول، اسماعیل بن محمد بن سعد اور نعیم بن سلامہ نے کہا ہے کہ اس میں کوئی حرج نہیں ہے۔ ابوداؤد کہتے ہیں: میری معلومات کی حد تک عبادہ بن نسی کے علاوہ کسی اور نے اس کو مکروہ نہیں کہا ہے۔

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم as saying: When you tell (your brother on Friday) to be silent while the imam is giving the sermon you are guilty of idle talk.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: Three types of people attend Friday prayer; One is present in a frivolous way and that is all he gets from it; another comes with a supplication, Allah may grant or refuse his request as He wishes; another is present silently and quietly with-out stepping over a Muslim or annoying anyone, and that is an atonement for his sins till the next Friday and three days more, the reason being that Allah, the Exalted, says: He who does a good deed will have ten times as much (vi. 160).

Narrated Aishah, Ummul Muminin: The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم said: When one of you becomes defiled during prayer, he should hold his nose and then turn away. Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been narrated by Hammad bin Salamah and Abu Usamah from Hisham on the authority of his father from the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم. They did not mention the name of Aishah.

Jabir said: I came (to the mouse) while the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was giving the (Friday) sermon. He asked: Did you pray, so-and-so? He replied: No. He said: Stand and pray.

Jabir and Abu Salih reported on the authority of Abu Hurairah: Sulaik al-Ghatafani came (to the mosque) while the Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم was giving the (Friday) sermon. He asked him: Did you pray something ? He said: No. He said: Offer two rak'ahs and make them short.

This tradition has also been transmitted through a different chain of narrators by Jabir bin Abdullah. This version adds: He (the Prophet) turned to the people and said: When one of you comes (on Friday) while the imam is preaching, he should pray two rak'ahs and make them short.
