Sahl b. Sa`d reported that a person from the offspring of Marwan was appointed as the governor of Medina. He called Sahl b. Sa`d and ordered him to abuse `Ali. Sahl refused to do that. He (the governor) said to him: If you do not agree to it (at least) say: May Allah curse Abu Turab. Sahl said: There was no name dearer to `Ali than Abu Turab (for it was given to him by the Prophet himself) and he felt delighted when he was called by this name. He (the governor) said to him: Narrate to us the story of his being named as Abu Turab. He said: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) came to the house of Fatima and he did not find `Ali in the house; whereupon he said: Where is your uncle's son? She said: (There cropped up something) between me and him which had annoyed him with me. He went out and did not rest here. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) asked a person to find out where he was. He came and said: Allah's Messenger, he is sleeping in the mosque. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) came to him and found him lying in the mosque and saw that his mantle had slipped from his back and his back was covered with dust and Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) began to wipe it away from him (from the body of Hadrat `Ali) saying: Get up, covered with dust (Abu Turab); get up, covered with dust.

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ، عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، قَالَ: اسْتُعْمِلَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ رَجُلٌ مِنْ آلِ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ: فَدَعَا سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ، فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَشْتِمَ عَلِيًّا قَالَ: فَأَبَى سَهْلٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَمَّا إِذْ أَبَيْتَ فَقُلْ: لَعَنَ اللهُ أَبَا التُّرَابِ فَقَالَ سَهْلٌ: مَا كَانَ لِعَلِيٍّ اسْمٌ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ أَبِي التُّرَابِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ لَيَفْرَحُ إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهَا، فَقَالَ لَهُ: أَخْبِرْنَا عَنْ قِصَّتِهِ، لِمَ سُمِّيَ أَبَا تُرَابٍ؟ قَالَ: جَاءَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْتَ فَاطِمَةَ، فَلَمْ يَجِدْ عَلِيًّا فِي الْبَيْتِ، فَقَالَ «أَيْنَ ابْنُ عَمِّكِ؟» فَقَالَتْ: كَانَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ شَيْءٌ، فَغَاضَبَنِي فَخَرَجَ، فَلَمْ يَقِلْ عِنْدِي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِإِنْسَانٍ «انْظُرْ، أَيْنَ هُوَ؟» فَجَاءَ فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ هُوَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ رَاقِدٌ، فَجَاءَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ مُضْطَجِعٌ، قَدْ سَقَطَ رِدَاؤُهُ عَنْ شِقِّهِ، فَأَصَابَهُ تُرَابٌ، فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَمْسَحُهُ عَنْهُ وَيَقُولُ «قُمْ أَبَا التُّرَابِ قُمْ أَبَا التُّرَابِ»

ابو حازم نے حضرت سہل بن سعد رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کی ، کہا : کہ مدینہ میں مروان کی اولاد میں سے ایک شخص حاکم ہوا تو اس نے سیدنا سہل رضی اللہ عنہ کو بلایا اور سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو گالی دینے کا حکم دیا ۔ سیدنا سہل رضی اللہ عنہ نے انکار کیا تو وہ شخص بولا کہ اگر تو گالی دینے سے انکار کرتا ہے تو کہہ کہ ابوتراب پر اللہ کی لعنت ہو ۔ سیدنا سہل رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو ابوتراب سے زیادہ کوئی نام پسند نہ تھا اور وہ اس نام کے ساتھ پکارنے والے شخص سے خوش ہوتے تھے ۔ وہ شخص بولا کہ اس کا قصہ بیان کرو کہ ان کا نام ابوتراب کیوں ہوا؟ سیدنا سہل رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سیدہ فاطمۃالزہراء رضی اللہ عنہا کے گھر تشریف لائے تو سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کو گھر میں نہ پایا ، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پوچھا کہ تیرے چچا کا بیٹا کہاں ہے؟ وہ بولیں کہ مجھ میں اور ان میں کچھ باتیں ہوئیں اور وہ غصہ ہو کر چلے گئے اور یہاں نہیں سوئے ۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ایک آدمی سے فرمایا کہ دیکھو وہ کہاں ہیں؟ وہ آیا اور بولا کہ یا رسول اللہ! علی مسجد میں سو رہے ہیں ۔ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس تشریف لے گئے ، وہ لیٹے ہوئے تھے اور چادر ان کے پہلو سے الگ ہو گئی تھی اور ( ان کے بدن سے ) مٹی لگ گئی تھی ، تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے وہ مٹی پونچھنا شروع کی اور فرمانے لگے کہ اے ابوتراب! اٹھ ۔ اے ابوتراب! اٹھ ۔

A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) lay on bed during one night and said: Were there a pious person from amongst my companions who should keep a watch for me during the nightt? She said: We heard the noise of arms, whereupon Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said: Who is it? And Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas said: Allah's MesseDger. I have come to serve as your sentinel. 'A'isha said: Allah' s Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) slept (such a sound sleep) that I heard the noise of his snoring.

A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace he upon him) laid down on bed during one night on his arrival at Medina and said: Were there a pious person from amongst my Companions who should keep a watch for me durin. the night? She (A'isha) reported: We were in this state that we heard the clanging noise of arms. lie (the Holy Prophet) said: Who is it? He said: This is Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) said to him: What brings you here? Thereupon he said: I harboured fear (lest any harm should come to) Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ), so I came to serve as your sentinel. Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) invoked blessings upon him. He then slept. This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Ibn Rumh with a slight variation of wording.

Abdullah b. 'Amir b. Rabi reported A'isha as saying: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) went to bed one night; the rest of the hadith is the same.

Abdullah b. Shaddad reported that he heard `Ali saying: Allah's Messenger ( صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ) did not gather his parents except in case of Sa`d b. Malik that he said to him on the Day of Uhud: Shoot an arrow, may my father and mother be taken as ransom for you.
