Al-Fa?l bin Sahl narrated to me, he said Yaz?d bin H?r?n narrated to us, he said Khal?fah bin M?s? informed me, he said: ?I entered upon Gh?lib bin Ubayd Allah so he began dictating to me ?Mak?h?l narrated to me this? and ?Mak?h?l narrated to me that?. So he prepared to answer the call of nature and stood up, then I looked in his notebook and in it was ?Ab?n narrated to me, on authority of Anas? and ?Ab?n on authority of so-and-so?. So I abandoned [listening to his ?ad?th] and stood up [to leave]?. I heard al-Hasan bin Al? al-Hulw?n? saying: ?I saw in one of the books of Aff?n a ?ad?th of Hish?m Ab?l-Miqd?m meaning a ?ad?th of Umar bin Abd il-Az?z. [In it was written] ?Hish?m said: ?A man said to be Yahy? bin so-and-so narrated to me, on authority of Muhammad bin Ka?b?? [Al-Hulw?n?] said, I said to Aff?n: ?They would say Hish?m heard it [directly] from Muhammad bin Ka?b?. So [Aff?n] said: ?Indeed Hish?m was stricken [with accusations of lying] with regards to this ?ad?th for he would say ?Yahy? narrated to me on authority of Muhammad?, then he claimed afterwards that he heard it from Muhammad [directly]?.?

حَدَّثَنِي الْفَضْلُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي خَلِيفَةُ بْنُ مُوسَى، قَالَ: «دَخَلْتُ عَلَى غَالِبِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ فَجَعَلَ يُمْلِي عَلَيَّ، حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ، حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ، فَأَخَذَهُ الْبَوْلُ، فَقَامَ فَنَظَرْتُ فِي الْكُرَّاسَةِ، فَإِذَا فِيهَا حَدَّثَنِي أَبَانُ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، وَأَبَانُ عَنْ فُلَانٍ، فَتَرَكْتُهُ، وَقُمْتُ‘قَالَ: وَسَمِعْتُ الْحَسَنَ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيَّ، يَقُولُ: رَأَيْتُ فِي كِتَابِ عَفَّانَ، حَدِيثَ هِشَامٍ أَبِي الْمِقْدَامِ، حَدِيثَ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، قَالَ هِشَامٌ: حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ يُقَالُ لَهُ يَحْيَى بْنُ فُلَانٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَفَّانَ: إِنَّهُمْ يَقُولُونَ هِشَامٌ، سَمِعَهُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّمَا ابْتُلِيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ، كَانَ يَقُولُ: حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، ثُمَّ ادَّعَى بَعْدُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ

خلیفہ بن موسیٰ نے خبر دی ، کہا : میں غالب بن عبید اللہ کے ہاں آیا تو اس نے مجھے لکھوانا شروع کیا : مکحول نے مجھ سے حدیث بیان کی ، مکحول نے مجھ سے حدیث بیان کی ۔ اسی اثنا میں پیشاب نے اسے مجبور کیا تو وہ اٹھ گیا ، میں نے ( جو ) اس کی کاپی دیکھی تو اس میں اس طرح تھا : مجھے ابان نے انس سے یہ حدیث سنائی ، ابان نے فلاں سے حدیث روایت کی ۔ اس پر میں نے اسے چھوڑ دیا اور اٹھ کھڑا ہوا ۔ ( امام مسلم نے کہا : ) اور میں نے حسن بن علی حلوانی سے سنا ، کہہ رہے تھے : میں نے عفان کی کتاب میں ابو مقدام ہشام کی ( وہ ) روایت دیکھی ( جو عمر بن عبد العزیز کی حدیث ہے ) ( اس میں تھا : ) ہشام نے کہا : مجھ سے ایک شخص نے جسے یحییٰ بن فلاں کہا جاتا تھا ، محمد بن کعب سے حدیث بیان بیان کی ، کہا : میں نے عفان سے کہا : ( اہل علم ) کہتے ہیں : ہشام نے یہ ( حدیث ) محمد بن کعب سے سنی تھی ۔ تو وہ کہنے لگے : وہ ( ہشام ) اسی حدیث کی وجہ سے فتنے میں پڑے ۔ ( پہلے ) وہ کہا کرتے تھے : مجھے یحییٰ نے محمد ( بن کعب ) سے روایت کی ، بعد ازاں یہ دعویٰ کر دیا کہ انہوں نے یہ ( حدیث براہ راست ) محمد سے سنی ہے ۔

Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Quhz?dh narrated to me, he said I heard Abd Allah bin Uthm?n bin Jabalah saying, I said to Abd Allah bin al-Mub?rak: ?Who is this man from whom you transmit the ?ad?th of Abd Allah bin Amr, ?The day of Fitr is the day of prizes???? [Abd Allah] said: ?Sulaym?n bin al-Hajj?j. Look at what I placed in your hands [of praise] about him?. Ibn Quhz?dh said I heard Wahb bin Zam?ah mentioning about Sufy?n bin Abd il-M?lik, he said, Abd Allah ?meaning Ibn al-Mub?rak- said: ?I saw Rawh bin Ghutayf, the companion of blood the amount of a Dirham , and I took a seat in one of his audiences. Then I began to become ashamed for my companions to see me sitting with him while his ?ad?th are disapproved of.?

Ibn Quhz?dh narrated to me, he said, I heard Wahb [bin Zam?ah] saying, on authority of Sufy?n [bin Abd il-M?lik], on authority of Ibn al-Mub?rak, he said: ?Baqiyyah [bin al-Wal?d] is truthful of tongue however he transmits [?ad?th] from those who approach [the Muhaddith?n, i.e. are trustworthy] and from those who turn their backs on [the Muhaddith?n, i.e. and are weak]?.

Qutaybah bin Sa??d narrated to us, Jar?r narrated to us, on authority of Mugh?rah, on authority of ash-Sha?b?, he said: ?al-H?rith al-A?war ul-Hamd?n? narrated to me, and he is a liar?.

Ab? ?mir Abd Allah bin Barr?d al-Ash?ar? narrated to us, Ab? Us?mah narrated to us, on authority of Mufa??al, on authority of Mugh?rah, he said I heard ash-Sha?b? saying: ?al-H?rith al-A?war narrated to me,? and he [ash-Sha?b?] was testifying that he was one of the liars?.

Qutaybah bin Sa??d narrated to us, Jar?r narrated to us, on authority of Mugh?rah, on authority of Ibr?h?m [bin Yaz?d an-Nakh???], he said, Alqamah said: ?I memorized the Qur??n in two years?. Al-H?rith said: ?The Qur??n is easy; the revelation [i.e. the secret revelation to Al? in the belief of the Sh??ah] is more difficult ?.

Hajj?j bin ash-Sh??ir narrated to me, Ahmad- meaning Ibn Y?nus- narrated to us, Z??idah narrated to us, on authority of al-A?mash, on authority of Ibr?h?m that al-H?rith said: ?I studied the Qur??n for three years and the revelation for two years?; or he said: ??the revelation in three years and the Qur??n in two years
